I like how some people on here say some of these request are overboard. I bet if it was them in the situation they wouldn't be saying that.

Dealership has a responsibility to make the truck whole again. They screwed up.

This happened to me once in a non tacoma vehicle. I ran the car with no oil in it at high rpm until the thing grenaded. They had no choice but to put in a new motor at that point.

I would at least want an engine with equal or less mileage then what you had at the very least. A screw up like this they should expect to install a brand new motor. Its not being greedy at all, definitely don't wait to deal with this especially if they are willing to work with you now. You never know how they're gonna treat you in a couple weeks when and if it totally shits the bed.

    Good luck.

I hate going to a dealer for anything just because of stuff like this. I avoid them like the plague.

My brother has had multiple screwups happen to him when he just had to take one in. He took a Mitsubishi EVO in for a recall once and filmed the odometer then did a walkaround filming until the dealer left with it. When he got the car back one wheel was horribly curbed. He was talking with the manager and she kept telling him it was that way when he brought it in. Even when he showed her the video she replied with "we'll let you know"... Took two days for her to call and tell him they'd decided to order him a new wheel.

Good luck, I hope you get a new engine. If it made a noise and died, it's got damage. I purposely ran a Briggs engine without oil once to try to kill it, it squealed right before it quit too. Let it cool and fill it with oil and it fired right up like no problem, but it was damaged!

Toyota corporate doesn't have anything to do with it unless it was a warranty oil change

Demand a new engine. That engine is toasted. If it is a high volume dealership they make mistakes and this is figured in as a cost of doing business. You will get resistance at first as they will test your will to be persistent. Most people walk away and deal with the consequences later. Be firm with the requirement for the new motor. A Lifetime Warranty in this case is worthless, unless it is added after the motor is changed.

I'm sure most of you realize this, but. A DIY oil change on this truck takes less than 10 mins. There's really no need to pay anyone to do it.

Sorry about your luck OP, you got a raw deal here. If the truck is running OK now, not sure you are going to get much other than a 'sorry' from them at this point. They don't owe you a new truck or anything, at most a new motor, which they will certainly point out is premature at this point if the truck is running fine.

Let them run their 250 mile check to see, but maybe get in writing from them both a loaner car (truck) and that you want a written description of specifically what they will check and what their findings were. Major damage should (but may not) show pretty quickly.

Let's say all is well for now, then it's time for the tough conversation with the dealer - I'd make sure this is with both the service manager and the dealership manager. You now have a truck with a much more 'limited' warranty...Toyota wouldn't warranty anything internally lubricated if they knew what had happened, and the dealer's promise to cover things is fine, but indeed worthless if that dealership is ever sold or closed.

The dealership will undoubtedly tell you they will make good on it...you need to get them to agree (in writing) for how much, and for how long, and then decide what the value of that statement is to you. Maybe ask for another major checkup at 20K or 30K. Not all dealers are crooks, but even an honest man who owns up to his mistake may have a very different opinion of what he 'owes' you, if anything. Legally, he may not owe you a nickel. So you need to decide what you are comfortable with here, if anything, and get it in writing.

You might consider getting your current extended warranty cancelled and refunded. Drive this truck for the remainder of the factory warranty, the dealer probably won't close in a year or two, and Toyota doesn't know about any of this yet. Then, before the 3/36 warranty is up, you can make the call as to whether to keep it and take the risk of a major failure, or sell it and get something new. Bottom line, to be 100% sure, you'll need to sell the truck...and you might be getting rid of a perfectly good truck. :frusty:

I would just drive it and see what happens. Dealer has documented everything. If there is an issue, I am sure Toyota will make good on it. Most likely there
is nothing wrong and you will have years of faithful service. Good luck.

Except that in my case you cant possibly change your oil at the $13 price the dealership charges.

Tell the dealer you want to trade the truck for a new one and ask him for a trade-in value in writing. See if they give a lower number than they would with a motor that didnt run without oil.

I would just call Toyota demand a lifetime powertrain warranty. Keep the truck if the engine seizes, etc later down the road, their problem. It will be a far easier battle than trying to get a whole new engine. Super sucks, said this before WTF Toyota.

Headed up to the dealership now, going to take silvFx recommendations and see where I get. I'm also asking for my extended warranty to be refunded unless they replace the engine in which case I will go with a good faith that anything that goes wrong will be on their side anyway.

I'm hoping to avoid attorneys and all that. I feel like that doesn't help anything and perpetuates the legal system problems we already have in our country.

Thank you again for all of your help, I will be bringing up this thread to the service manager's attention. 5 pages of opinion would get my attention. You guys are the best. Details to follow.
