Well, if they had the reputation to do quality work the first time at a reasonable price, I'd bet more people might use dealerships. Personally, I just don't see where they are held in high esteem. Not their fault all the time, there is plenty of blame to go around. Now, when there are things that absolutely need Toyota equipment or tools to diagnose correctly, or issues that need assistance from their Toyota HQ, I understand that they may be the best choice.

I can do the vast majority of work on my own vehicles, know it's done right, know I didn't forget something because I'm trying to beat book time and can touch up paint or undercoat any parts or underbody places that may need it. I do NOT expect a mechanic to do that, they are getting paid to ONLY do the work requested and unless authorized to do more, that's it.

I do all my oil changes now that I have a good dry place to do them. But when I was still getting it changed by other folks I would only take it to Oil Can Henry's because you can actually watch them do all the work from the camera screen next for your car.

You get what you pay for in life the vast majority of the time. Saving $15 twice a year just isn't worth risking 5-8 grand worth of engine destruction because methie McMeth forgot to put oil in or didn't tighten the filter [if he changed it at all] or didn't tighten the drain bolt.

I take my truck there but I'm inside the service bay right next to my truck watching everything closely . I even will watch them drain the oil , r&r the filter and pan plug

On my other car I do the same and even demand / request that the filter be filled with oil . I'll even watch them to make sure they're not touching my paint or any other part of my vehicle . if so I will request them to clean it off

This goes for any type of repair or service work I'm having done , I'm shadowing the techs every move

If you go through that level of effort, why not change it yourself?

Get a fumoto valve and you can do the oil change without tools in about 20 minutes with no mess, and have peace of mind

Saying all dealerships are the same are like saying every plumber is the same, every contractor is the same, every doctor is the same

@Aussiek2000 You can't come into a thread about a Toyota tech failing to put oil in a tech and take it personally. If you try to defend dealerships in here, you're gonna have a bad time.

Hmmm, I just reread the ops post. No where does it state it was an uneducated or unskilled 'lube boy'. There's an assumption it was but no evidence to prove otherwise. I never take my Tacoma in for any service other than a TSB as needed. When I purchased my wife's car, I took it in for the first service so that I could see where the screws were to lower the underbody pan and access the filter. Now that was not a Toyota (turbo Subaru Forester) but it was a tech that did the oil change. How do I know? Brother in law worked as a salesman at the dealership. Quite possible other dealerships don't pay techs to change oil but maybe they do. Everyone makes mistakes regardless of education, skill sets or pay grade. :crapstorm:

I'm not so much defending that dealership, but dealerships as a whole. I retract my previous statement as I don't know who did the work for OP

I agree with this, any operation without oil will damage bearing and journals and possibly cam surfaces.

Op stated he drove it about half a mile. That engine is toast. In my opinion, the dealer owes him a new engine no matter who did the work, especially since it was in for only 15K service.

Is there any chance that the synthetic oil could have still given protection, as this commercial shows?:

Maybe, but the customer should not be asked to test the dealer's mistakes.

The last dealer I went to quoted me $500 to re surface my rotors. And then told me they were warped because I do a lot of highway driving. This isn't uncommon in the dealer world. If they want to create good, loyal business for themselves they can stop screwing everyone that walks in the door. You can argue some are honest, and I wouldn't believe you. Even if it were the case, It would be 1 out of 100. If the dealer techs don't like it. Work somewhere else.
