those oil filters have a metal center hole, looks like a strand of metal came loose from it and poked out the drain hole

Either it was there when you put the filter on, or it arrived later. Not sure it really matters now.

You could take it all apart and try to find any other pieces, or you could flush it out with fresh oil, put a new filter on, and send it.

My guess is you'll be fine, but there's a minor chance you'll need a new engine in the next few thousand miles. I don't think its worth tearing into unless it starts having issues.

just out of curiosity, did you see if the metal would stick to a magnet? Just kind of a starting point for figuring out where or where not it could have come from.

The filter itself has a metal mesh that holds the paper filter media. That’s what it looks like to me.

Engine damage looks like metal curly-cues

In other words: "either you're totally fine, or you're totally fucked"

    :boink:

But yeah, those are two distinct possibilities, lol

@Tacomaislife as I mentioned earlier, I would drive it around for a bit (sounds like you already have), and then change the oil again. As long as it seems to be running normally with no weird sounds you could probably wait a month. Use a coffee filter to catch any potential metal pieces coming out of the engine pan, and closely inspect the filter. If it appears clean, and there's no shiney bit on the coffee filter, replace the filter and refill.

If you get metal shavings in the engine pan, then yeah, you're in for :spending:

    Good luck

Finish your oil change, and forget it ever happened. I’ll bet it runs another 100 000 miles.

That's what filters do they stop trash. Now I'm sure you don't realize Fram is the #1 selling filter made they did not get that way building junk filters I don't think there is such a thing as "the best filter" they all do exactly the same thing.

If you are super worried and can't stop thinking about it.. blackstone laboratories sells oil sampling kits. They don't cost too much.

Counterfeit car parts is a thing. Auto parts stores or reputable sellers normally have a chain of reliable suppliers but counterfeit crap in a shipment of genuine parts is not unheard of. They don't always know it and if you get a fake, you should let them know and they will investigate/stop using this supplier

Buying parts on internet is hit or miss sometimes, as fakes are often getting rid of this way by unscupulous sellers.

I also didn't tell him to remove (or replace) the oil drain plug. My post wasn't a step by step instruction manual.
