bought a 2006 tacoma access cab trd 2 months ago. bought it with a little over 14,000 miles at toyota dealer. we've had a lot of rain the past week. been driving over pools of water obviously. notice some rust stains on my driveway were i park the truck. looking under the truck. cassis in some areas looks corroded with rust. anyone have any experience with this? is that even supposed to happen? rust on the the chassis, already?

Welcome to the forum. It's a known issue. Toyota Tacoma 1st gen and 2gen frames rust badly because of crappy frame paint. Talk to your dealer and see if they'll help you. They'll probably do nothing, but maybe if you raise holy hell you'll get somewhere.

Given the lackluster frame paint, is rustproofing/undercoating advised?

Many people choose to take the situation into their own hands because Toyota will not do anything unless the rust perforates the frame. Although many people are speculating that there will be a 2nd Gen frame rust recall based on peoples experience. Search the forum and you will find lots of people who paint their frames. See this thread http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/164013-frame-rusted-through-club-10.html where it's discussed ad nauseum.

    • The only product that I say is bad is the rubberized under coating. Stay away from that shit, it's asphalt in a can.
    • Rustoleum is the cheapest route and it works...but it will chip if rocks hit it.
    • POR-15 is the most expensive shit and it works amazing from all the reports I have read. Its Achilles heel is UV light exposure.
    • Wax coating is the best as far as I am concerned.
I plan on buying some cavity wax and cleaning and spraying my frame rails soon. This is the shit I am going to buy: http://www.waxoyl-usa.com/

If only I could go back in time knowing what I know now, I'd have coated my frame when it was brand new. My (1) day old taco:

por 15 is the way to go. best stuff for rust. hence the name
    P paint
    O over
    R rust
use it often. uv exposure doesnt matter on your frame rails. sun won't ever see it.

Lol! Appreciate your concern. Carfax was clean. Previous owner bought it new. Was a retired man. Took care of it. Garage kept. Paint job looks great. No swirls. Only problem is what lies beneath the truck.

If that is true, then he must have had a nephew that snuck it out and drove it on the beach and then put it back in unc's garage without a wash, otherwise the frame would be clean.
