I’ve got a trip coming up. I will make a point of taking some photos when I wash my frame. I’ll start a thread that others are welcome to contribute to.

Crazy this hasn't been solved yet. Definitely going to look into the fluid film 'solution'

There really is nothing to solve. Toyota has made a specific choice not to solve it. Mankind knows how to paint metal so it does not corrode. The science is long established. It isn’t a secret, but it is an expense. Toyota is choosing to apply substandard coatings, for reasons known only to them. Application time? Drying time? Cost? Skilled labour?

Anyways.....it’s not a mistake, it is on purpose.

Guess my Las Vegas truck doesn't need this coating.

Anyone recommend something I can do myself, that isn't crazy expensive, just as a precaution.

Aha yes, fair point. Perhaps I should have said, "Crazy Toyota has chosen to not solve this yet"

Any knowledge on how a recently purchased vehicle from a qualifying state and then driven and currently living in non qualifying state would work?

Had the dealer take a look at mine last weekend and they advised that it needs to form a hole or be compromised in some way, but my VIN is covered so they'll replace it entirely if it goes bad by 7/2023. I then called Toyota US and spoke to someone about the class action lawsuit this new warranty is in response to. They told me the registration state is not relevant and it's solely linked to the VIN (I'm in IL at the moment) and when to replace a frame is entirely up to the dealer's discretion.

The rust on my 2011 is all from the last year and, although IL is extremely salty, I clean it adequately so it's pretty disappointing that it would corrode so quickly/easily (see pics). My struggle now is how to get it to a replaceable level without risking other parts of the truck...

Yikes! That's unreal for one year. I don't think you need to worry, a couple more winters and that this is toast. You will certainly have some big holes before the cut off date.

Quick update: took it to another dealer for a 2nd opinion and this service manager told me the rust is "completely normal for any 2011 vehicle" so I brought up the ZKA warranty and he wouldn't even acknowledge it. Then, they hesitated to give me a hard copy of the inspection report and acted like the request was out of the ordinary. Ironically, they offered me the exact same amount on tradein as the last dealer...

For anyone going through the same struggle, I'd recommend calling Toyota and getting a case number for yours. Seems to be the best way to link your covered frame back to the warranty concretely.

Until the campaign is started, we just have to wait. Idk why you folks didn't read the part that says "don't bug the shit outta your dealers until we start the campaign, please, unless your junk is a rusty tetanus case" :)

I actually brought mine in before reading this thread so only posted to keep others informed. Toyota told me this went into effect on 9/5 and actually advised to get multiple opinions on it. That being said, I'm holding off until on going back in until this winter takes its toll.

Did my first oil change on my Taco and took a look at the frame underneath.. thankfully mine has literally 0 rust at 160k miles.

Best of luck to those affected.. hoping you get yours safely repaired.

The notice, not this thread, says to take no action until the campaign starts unless the frame appears to already meet the criteria. If it's bad, you likely did the right thing.

i.e. "Bad" or "meets their criteria" to me at least, means it's flaking off severely. Not just surface rust. Hell, my sliders look like hell because they get used! My mid skid has never been painted :anonymous:

Oh, I see. I haven't gotten the notice in the mail so this all started for me in deciding to ask the dealer to take a look preemptively. It's pretty gnarly as you can see, but not bad enough yet I guess.

Your frame is incredibly progressed and probably should've been covered on the existing frame coat/replace program.

Yeah, I've hit it in a few spots. Pretty significant flakes fall off with some tapping but no perforation

Did you hit the inside of the frame near the cats with a picking hammer? That's where mine perf'd through on my 2nd gen.
