So I was sideswiped/rear ended earlier this month. I was stopped in traffic and an old lady was making a turn and caught my left rear corner. Busted the tail light, bumper cap, nice scratch in the side. I just got off the phone with the body shop after getting the supplemental appraisal.

Apparently the impact was enough to shift the tabs that the metal reinforcing under the bumper goes into. In order for the new bumper to work, the guy at the shop said they had to pull the frame into alignment 1 cm.

I know this isn't a huge amount, but from reading on here I learned Toyota doesn't recommend frame repairs and requires replacement. Now I don't know if this is enough of a repair to cause long term issues, but it is concerning to me.

Should I push for a new frame or them to total the truck? I am kind of lost here

If the frame is out of spec, you need a new one. They make them "soft" on purpose for passenger safety reasons.

If they'd rather total it, . . .well

If it was me doing the work to my own truck I'd smack them with a hammer and be on with my life.

The frame is high strength steel you can pull it cold back into spec to relieve stress but you can’t use heat as it will weaken the steel. If they can’t get it into spec you need a new one.

This is not true. If it’s kinked or buckled it needs to be replaced. A little bit of sag or sway is easily repairable. And the shop will gladly give you a printout from showing it within tolerances if you ask them to.

I found that same info so I am a little less worried. Now the next question is do I file for a diminished value claim? Not too familiar with those

Yes you can and you will get it but it’s a lengthy process of back and forth with the at fault insurer as their offer will be much less than what you would be entitled too don’t sign off on anything. Expect to hire a third party and go to battle because insurance companies like to treat nickels like manhole covers. Plenty of info on the web about this including a thread on here but a don’t recall the title.
