Last night my dad and I went to a local Toyota dealership to get my trucks frame checked out. We immediately showed the guy a hole right above my left rear tire (about the size of an inch and a half wrench) and they took the truck and lifted it up in the air. Upon searching, they found another hole, even bigger! They told us that Toyota has a requirement of hole size, of a 10mm wrench. We also had knowledge that the truck had been sprayed with rust protection by the dealership. Have I added that at this point I have 279k on it? Let this be a note fellas, there's never too many miles for a new frame! I'm thankful to be able to keep the truck. My dad and I were honestly surprised they took it with almost 300k on it. So if anyone is questioning if they'll replace it, take note that this one here has 279k and they're doing it.
Thanks for reading, I just figured I'd share my story! :D

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Great news! I hope I never have to go through it with my 04 but if I do and Toyota wont do it, I will probably just have a custom frame built for it.

Its kinda scary when you're at the dealership..its like the moment of truth..is your truck doomed, or good to go for another 10/20 years? I got lucky I guess

I like the idea of a custom frame, might just be a market for that.

Just take your truck in to a dealer. They'll do a check of your vin and see if it has been sprayed or not.

    Good for you man!

I'm a little concerned that any hole in the frame is acceptable to Toyota, 10mm wrench size or not WTF????

Thats just what the guy said. I do agree with you 100% though, its sadly the only flaw in these trucks.

Were there any out of pocket costs to you? Like for parts that arent replaced but that are too rusty to be re-used

There's not a size requirement. I have a variety of 10mm wrenches of all different sizes, not exactly a precise measurement. Mechanic was talking out his ass.

Not out of pocket, no. I'm not sure if they will be or not. But I guess the truck is going in tomorrow!

    Probably was haha.

well let me ask this, I just bought a 99 truck and the frame looks to be in too good a shape for its age (black and no rust at all) but its not shiny or obviously new so maybe the frame was replaced a few years ago?

is there a website to go to and check to see if the frame was already replaced on this truck?

Toyota had a frame made already, so they just had to ship it to Wisconsin.

Take it to a dealer and they should track your vin number and they'll tell you.

So i called my dealer to schedule a frame inspection, but because they inspected and coated the frame in 2011 they said there would be a charge. So i called toyota corporate and am waiting on a case manager to call me by tomorrow to discuss options or something. Does that sound normal for a dealer to charge for inspecting warranty work? (Even though its out of their warranty period for work they performed)

You may be able to get some info at safercar.gov. The link below is their VIN search, but I think it will only list what recalls your vehicle needs and does not include any recall work that has been performed.

    https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/

ETA: OP, that was nice and quick! Congrats on you getting your truck back, newer!
