I’m considering buying a 1999 Tacoma with 240,000 miles for $5,500 and seeking some advice on the frame, as I am very much a newby in the Tacoma world. Is this frame rust bad? It just passed inspection a couple of months ago, but I poked around a bit under the rear wheel well and found a couple of soft spots (see last photo).

It has new tires, rear shocks, and a new clutch. Drives great and looks pretty good overall, I just don’t know anything about frame rust.

Any help/advise would be much appreciated!

Looks like a possible vertical crack forming to the left of your finger hole. Shock mount is about to break off too. Hammer test the rest. Looks bad. Might need new rails. I'm currently working on grafting in new rear frame rails and cross-members on mine. Lot of work and a couple thousand dollars. If the rest of it checks out with a hammer and it has enough material left to weld to. Safe-t-caps MIGHT be an option to consider.

I've made plenty of bad investments I thought were fun projects. The most expensive best one was putting 3/4 ton axles and a V8 in a 1988 Toyota pickup :D

That is exactly what I did (walk away, that is). Thank you for confirming I made the right decision!

Gonna need to redo it right with a safe-t-cap. How’s the rest of her?

Go check it out but looking like they didn't take enough of the rust out and its continuing to form. Probably going to be a no as well, unless the price is right of course. Took me a while to find a decent frame Tacoma here in Wisconsin (and I still bought a rusty truck but with a new frame). Just stay on the search and you'll find something.

Ok guys. Last one, I promise! I think I’ve found a winner. See anything here I should be concerned with? I see that the frame has been recently painted, but it looks pretty solid to me from what I can tell.

Looks clean, but what are those lines on the rail behind the tire? welded crack?

If it was, you could put a safe-t-cap over that spot for extra reinforcement if it was a concern and the rest is good. What model is this? How much?

Of course, that paint could be hiding rust, looking at the exhaust pipe, gas tank skid plate and wheel hubs. But that rail doesn't look like a pastry in the hole, so that's promising.

There's some kind of reinforcement welded to the tall bed body mount. Wonder what that was put on for? Just small talking. It really looks promising.
