A bit strange that the frame is painted when it looks pretty rust free. Have you asked the owner why it is painted? It could be something like corroseal or POR15. Definitely worth going to see. Tap it with a hammer all around. A cheap borescope would be helpful while doing these inspections.

Yeah, that was the one area I was concerned with as well. It’s a 96 with 196k miles on it

Someone may be able to answer your question but I would post more pics…
Either way you spin it you’re in for it now, money pit for mods or money pit to keep it running (pending on condition), the good news is that you’re at the right place amigo, congrats on your purchase and welcome to TW!

Thanks! I’ve got 3 things I know I have to fix right off the bat. Muffler, speedometer cable and e brake cable. I’m sure I’ll find plenty more… lol

Since your muffler’s shot. You have a good excuse to put a cat-back on there. Make it rumble!

No clue! I think it’s just a decal the previous owner bought and slapped on there after he painted it lol

When I was shopping for an older Tacoma, I learned really quick the first warning sign was the spare tire being in the bed and not underneath of it. The spare tire holders were rusted out and so was everything else underneath. Also learned after 2 years there were no older Tacoma's worth buying. I gave up and bought a new one only to learn Toyota never corrected the frame issues in 2016 when the new models came out.
A couple weeks ago while in the boneyard with my brother looking for parts for his 2000 S10 I could not believe how many of those we saw with broken frames. Chevrolet is no better with their frames.
Do make my Tacoma last, I have been parking it during the winter months the last 3 years.

For $4250 I'd say you did good! After you fix the muffler you should look into replacing the lower ball joints if they are of unknown age. Also recommend checking the cap on the rear diff breather make sure it jiggles.
