The 2016 frames are the same, just "reinforced". The liability was absorbed both by Dana and Toyota, with Dana taking most of the responsibility, I believe. It's crazy to think that they would be running the same frame in the 2009+, but Toyota also let the shitty frames run for 13 YEARS prior to that. That is an interesting point about the 2016 frame. I never really thought about that possibility. The fact that the 2016 frame is "reinforced" and fits previous years, leads me to believe that they didn't make many changes to the prior frames, and have an available replacement already in a production run if the 2009+ rust out. If that is true, it just shows how much they cut corners.

^^^ THIS. I think BlueT is right on with the fact that the 2016 frame will fit the 2009+ if they rust out. Unbelievable.

The issue with the frames is not Dana fault (at least not totally) there is a design/process problem here.
The only changes Toyota did to improve rust protection was to include plastic plugs to cover holes in the frame at the front wheels. They did that after I started this thread
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/winter-trick-to-help-protect-frame.128974/
I started thread after I realized tires pack inside of the frame with salt and snow.

Plugs help, but the paint process is the same which is what the real issue here is. Toyota is the only company, that makes frames to order. Frames are constructed from multiple pieces of metal sandwiched together and quickly painted with powder process before frame is sent to assembly manufacturing facility.
Other companies make their frames with large continues beams a head of orders. Continues beams are better for powder coating and frame has more time to clean and cure since its not made to order.
When you sandwich two sheets of metal, than weld them together, powder paint has no way to get in between. But over time moisture will find its way and rust from inside out (which is what happening)
Sadly Toyota haven't changed that in 2016 trucks either. so those frames failures will continue.

Big question is how many frames they going to replace before they call it a day. 2009+ guys have a real fight with Toyota in front of them unless you get some Eng to take a case and prove its a design failure like in the case of GM ignition.

Oh so you know those mofos gave me a new frame but did not gave me plugs for the front of the frame to prevent snow packing inside ...back to aluminum tape again. :)

Has anybody on here in Utah had their frame inspected or replaced? If so what dealer did you use and how was your experience? I'm glad Utah was included in this recall because the roads here are extremely salted in the winter. You'd think there was an unlimited supply nearby the way they use that stuff! ;)

Took mine in this morning and dropped it off for the inspection. It passed, got the undercoating, not sure how I feel about the undercoating and it's longevity.

Salt Lake City here. Failed inspection at Mark Miller, where I've had good service in the past. The service advisor told me it would be "average of $1500-2000 out of pocket for stuff they'll break while disassembling," and gave me a bad impression all around.
Called Larry h miller the same day and even over the phone they were much more helpful and explained that most parts just take an authorization call to Toyota to get covered. Took my truck there and failed their inspection. Frame ordered. Told me three month wait, it's been one.

Thanks for the reply! I live closer to karl malone toyota so obviously it's more convenient but I got a gut feeling it will end up costing me if it fails based on past experience there. I actually bought my truck from larry h miller and the experience was good so I'll give them a shot.

Do you realize...putting tape on those holes traps moisture inside the frame? ...and.... well, we all know what happens when you trap moisture inside frames.

Stay out of the snow drifts, problem solved. ;)

Covering holes at the wheels would lock moisture in the frame? Since I am not sure if you are serious, I am going think it was attempt at sarcasm.o_O

Got my truck back today. Took 4 days for the frame replacement, etc. Felt fine driving but I'll have to wait and see how it feels after a few weeks. Saw the Toyota Corp bill from the dealer for the replacement costs, including the rental for me, $12,483 !!! KBB value is $14,600 Just keep laughing about this one !!

Thats how they roll, now they will spend another $3000 for leaf replacements, they should have bought all those trucks.

....and Toyota isn't loosing any money on this. They're not stupid. They're reaping the benefits of someone else's F-up and I'm sure there's insurance claims to cover the rest.

They're not stupid and they've been in business for a long time. They wouldn't do it if it didn't benefit them in some way.

I thought they took a write off on the loss when they issued recall. They did not got a lot from Dana Corp since they were in bankruptcy already. So most of that money has to be covered by Toyota. Even if they got some money for 2005-2008 they will get nothing for 2009+

New leaf springs were part of my frame replacement along with new brake lines, wire harness, lower control arms, spare tire carrier.

I'm glad they didn't give me $15k for my truck instead. I could not replace it for that. Now I have a like new truck.... well except for the 145k miles on it !!!!! LOL

Does anyone really & truly know what or how it went down? No...... You can't believe anything you read online. Only the Toyota suits and accounting folks know the bottom line. They wouldn't do it if they didn't see some sort of benefit.

It was a warranty ..... Unlike a RECALL that is forced by government & NTSB.

Undercoating is false security. It hides more problems then it cures.

This is why I am hesitant about going in and getting the coating. My frame has surface rust but no holes right now.
