If I find the article link I will post it on here, but I believe in 2010 Toyota killed their contract with Dana and started making the Taco frames in house with a subsidiary company. The 2010+ frames "should" be better, emphasis on should be. With that said there a numerous forums regarding rust proofing, fluid film seems popular.

My God... I honestly thought the answer would way more likely be "they fixed the glitch", but now I know (by the replies so far) that's not the case. Glad I asked.

IT'S A BRAND NEW 25K+ VEHICLE!!! Not yelling at you, yelling at the absurdity. I'm not going to take on yet another hobby / pastime and friggin rustproof my BRAND NEW TRUCK. If they indeed haven't figured this problem out by now, that's beyond fckng pathetic, and no I won't let the door slam my ass on the way out. IF this turns out to be even a 25% possibility that my frame will rust because they haven't figured it out in ten years or whatever, the truck's going back and Toyota will suck on it.

You guys are aware that all truck frames rust, right? Look under a newer Jeep Wrangler sometime. Most are rusty as shit around here. Ford, Dodge, GM, etc. they all rust.

Oh and the 4Runner and Tacoma are different frames, and the 4Runner is still made in Japan.

I'm not at all worried about that type of rust. I had a 2003 Wrangler for 11 years... I know what you are talking about. I'm talking about the horror stories rust that causes frames to fall apart.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tacoma-frame-rust-toyota-unethical-practices.270326/

That's not "rust", that's lethal. Granted it's an older Tacoma but I've heard nothing yet on this thread to make me believe I wouldn't possibly be in the same boat someday.

Prevention is the best medicine. Treat your frame, protect your investment, proceed with whimsy. Worry about it in 10 years.

There's plenty of other trucks that have the frames fail from rust. Not just Toyota.

I've got a 67 year old Chris Craft, all wood. I don't need another high-maintenance toy. I just wanted a cool truck as a daily driver and have always liked Tacomas. I just assumed they were solid, based on all the love stories I'd heard about them. Maybe they're more for people who want to work on their cars / trucks... that's not me unfortunately. My plate is already full. I do appreciate the info, though, in case I were to be one of those types

Don't get too overblown with the rust thing. No need to be in fear, or think it's high maintenance. It's a truck. Shoot some goo on the undercarriage (giggity) once a year and drive it. Or don't shoot any goo and drive it.

No need to be paranoid about it, just be aware that it historically has had issues with certain components and it remains to be seen if they're permanently fixed. I knew full well what I was buying into when I ordered my 2013, and 2 years later the only issue I have is crappy leaf springs. I knew that was coming when I bought, still bought. You'll be hard pressed to find a better truck in any size, given the benefits that owning a Tacoma offers.

The Tacoma is #1 in sales, has been for a while. It's a solid truck.

Depends I'm also in Alabama I've seen plenty of everything rust on the forums I'm on though.. My 2000 dakota didn't in the 5 years I dd it. Still to this day not a spot of rust. Even on welds where you will have high points and splatter where the paint will always be the thinnest.

    NP

It was small dime sized place. I'll have to look when I get home but I'll take a pic. I haven't looked since that. I now have almost 18k on the truck.

The only thing worse than TorqueNews is the comments at the bottom of TorqueNews, IMO.

I read somewhere today that 5 or so years for salted roads, 10 for non salted, and then you could have problems. I guess that's the bottom line I'm left with. So be it, I'll deal with it by selling before 10 years hits since I drive where they don't salt the roads.
