I've owned it for 2 months as of the 8th. I bought it with 450 miles on it and as I type this is has 1709 miles. So I put on about 1200. Dang. I should have scraped and painted BEFORE I bought it, huh? How's that for prevention? :p

On a serious note, I'm guessing surface rust is normal? That's what it said on the work order findings.

lol....or better yet, If your truck is rusting in 2 months, imagine what a comparable Nissan, Chevy, Ford or Dodge would have wrong with it.

Anyways, yes surface rust is normal but I wouldn't think so on a 2 month old truck. Either your truck sat on the dealers lot awhile, or you live in a humid, salt air environment.

Regarding the two months: You're scaring me. I hope my frame doesn't fall apart in 9 months. :(

my 06 looks like it sat in the ocean for two years. i snapped a weak ass leaf spring last winter. bought my lift and started in install. holy shit were things rusted. a week of pb blaster did nothing. wish i had a torch to heat stuck parts. i have allot of work to do before winter. this shit isn't right.

btw whoever says its common or take care of it better can bite me. my wife's pathfinder is a 06. twice the miles i have and the underside is like new. i was pissed even more when i saw this!

I was thinking of doing that soon. In searching I found this. Would that void the warranty because I did something...like, "alter" it?

Being in Vermont in the winter, I wash the underside of the truck on a weekly bais, if not more often.

We bought my wife's 2011 Sienna back in March. I was fully expecting the dealer to try and sell me a rustproofing package, which he did, but all it ws was a paint protection wax for $600. I asked him, "No undercoating of the frame? His reply was no, that they don't undercoat because the frame was already treated and by adding another coat of undercoating it would void the Toyota comprehensive corrosion warranty. Was he selling me a line of BS? I doubt it, because I was told the same thing when I bought my Tacoma in 2006.

Anyways, if your truck is starting to show surface rust on the frame at 2 months, should you worry? Depends. I don't think undercoating it at this point will help, but only retard any rust you have brewing and may make it worse if not done properly. I have come to the realization that my truck will rust. I've accepted that. My truck isn't bad by any means, and chances are I will part ways with it before the body crumbles apart.

ATO front skid (need more but icon's might fail if I hang anything else from my truck) All-Pro front bumper thanks to a good deal here and a pesky encounter with a rock or 20, total chaos uppers.
But my wife's old 95 pathfinder did have a frame and she lived on the east coast and her trucks frame looked better than my 05 did a year after I bought it. We live in California and I bought the truck new here in 05. I do clean the frame up once a year with a wire brush and some paint and its "ok" but has had more issues than any of my previous fords.
I love my truck but Toyotas quality has definitely slipped and this is likely my last yota.

Toyota trucks have always had frame rust issues. If you bought the 2nd gen Tacoma thinking its going to be different, you are foolish.

If you plan on keeping your truck for 20+ years, get under the truck and clean it once or twice a year. It goes a long way.

This. When researching cars I knew both the first gen taco and tundra had the issue, so I figured the second gen taco wouldn't be too much different. Any time the taco sees salt, she gets a fresh water bath and a good cover with some silicon fluid film. The frame has NO rust on it at this point with 66k miles on the truck. The only places i have rust are the front lower control arms, and most of that is due to rocks chipping away at the paint.

Im with this guy, I work with steel and in no way can rust work from the inside out, it will eat from one side to the other though. Take a rusty piece of steel and cut it with a zip-cut and look inside, it will be untuched. So it started on the outside, under the painted area, through a pin hole or a crack in the paint or on the other side of the wall where you cant see. Oil undercoat is the way to go, Paint will not stop 100% of rust. Best of luck to you.

My 87 and 95 pre-tacomas built in Japan never had frame rust issues & I drove those trucks in NE for over 10yrs each.
It was always the seams on the side of the bed & where the chrome wheel wheel trim was around the fenders & the bottom left corner of the windshield that bubbled & rusted. The frame & engine went forever I still see a few of them around here with wood boxes running around.

The tacomas I see have a frame swap now but toyota puts a rusty box back on. I have a friend who has this everything gets taken off & replaced then they slap the rust bed back on? :notsure:

I smell BS,... pics or it did not happen.
