Yeah, winters up here are harsh on vehicles. Really it's all the crap used by the PA DOT. It's either rust, paint chipping and/or windshield damage from all the anti-skid/salt mixture used.

I do wonder one thing, is the purely an issue with Toyota truck, SUV, undercarriages or has anyone seen the same issues with corolla and camery undercarriages? I know this is a tacoma forum, but wonder if they have the same issues or do they have a different treatment for those vehicles.

this is what im sayin wiscdave, even tho ur frame is rusting away and ur not doing anyhing about it, u still dont have pitted metal like the op and he only has the one spot. Im not a frame or rust specialist so i could he talking outta my ass but it seems strange to have one spot of rust soo advanced with no other rust present

We wanted to trade up wife's car to Sequoia but this is not gonna happen. With my second Toyota truck battling rust I think I am done. I won't sell the pickup but I will not buy Toyota car again either. Sequoia owners For now I am going to fill NHTSA report.

My wife has an 02 camry and its way better..but then again it doesn't have a frame. The LCA and rear wheel wells have slight surfase rust strarting to show. I had a DD - an old 94 GEO (coralla) that was in better shape than the 1st gens a couple years ago.

That top part of the frame that is not completely boxed and has holes in it towards the front is the worst design.. It traps salt and it eats from the inside. I should have put oil or made sure it was treated right off the lot..3years later I'm screwed.

My splash guard came loose and it looks like I clipped it in the wrong hole, it should have been clipped in the hole to the left. Things would line up then.

Look at the bottom of wiscdave's cab sheetmetal... I think it's just frames that have this.

Body panels (camry and corolla are unibody) are electro-galvanized for rust protection.

That's not my truck its a member named Nad

I agree its the Frames and it hasn't changed yet.

I've gotta take some pics of mine..its not bad yet cause I undercoated but the undercoating is flaking off in big pieces - Undercoating was done by Ziebart and has been touched up every year.

(DIY)...Fog lights, alloys, wheelwell liners, tonneau, frame cleanup & rustproofing, floor mats, trailer hitch.
BlueT, it's just a guess but the rust in your photo looks to be originating from outside the frame but inside the inner paint layer (that orange paint)...suggesting that it may have started by water somehow leaking in behind the paint and getting sealed/sitting in paint pockets/bubbles (i.e., not rusting from inside the frame to outside the frame). I've seen it happen on painted metal before, generally when the paint is applied very thick and either never got a good initial metal bond or simply expanded or contracted away sometime after application.

I agree though, the metal used in Toyota truck frames seems quite poor and even reasonably good maintenance often isn't enough to prevent bad rust. The best that can be done is to put heavy doses of clean rinsewater on and through the frame (through the front boxed sections) during winter, and use paint + some kind of oil/wax coating to keep the metal sealed off as much as possible. BTW, many car washes recycle their rinse water...so what you are really doing at a car wash is rinsing with the salty water from cars that went through before you. Home rinsing with a hose is better...except for the crawling around on the ground part.

For getting rustproofing inside the boxed sections of Taco frames I've found that a length of 12/3 electrical wire (with sheath still on for easier gripping), with a sponge soaked in oil/wax coating on the tip, makes a decent swab for treating inside the boxes. Messy, but seems effective. Buying a sprayer with nozzle extensions that can spray 360 degrees and reach the entire frame interior would be best...but somewhat pricey and even more messy.

I'm about to make some wheel well skirts to reduce how much slush/water/mud can fly off the tires and onto the rear frame rails/spare tire supports/inside bumper (unlike cars, trucks have pretty open wells). Anything to keep water and crap contained in the wells until it can fall to the ground, instead of blowing all over the undercarriage.

For you boys that don't have much/any experience in salt country, you may intend to be helpful but be careful about wearing the expert hat and assuming that you know the score when it comes to rust prevention in salt belt areas. No matter how much you read about it, unless you've actually lived/driven/suffered in it (and a few years ain't enough) you really can't imagine what it's like or know how to deal effectively with the rust thing. The how-to for snow belt rust prevention (including how often and how much) is definately a learned experience here.

    Happy swabbing.

The roads are salted and brined here every winter. My 06 gets minor surface rust in a few area's. I don't see what is so hard about getting under there with a wash brush and a hose once or twice a year, touch up with whatever paint/corrosion guard you prefer, I use marine products.

It also rains 8-10 months a year here so there is plenty of fresh water on the roads that rinses the salt off after winter. Its almost not necessary to get under there and clean it but it looks nice.

Because we live in the eminem age. This is the age where no body wants to take responsibility for their own actions, and looks for someone else to blame. Oh your kid is doing bad in school, must be those eminem records, couldn't be you, all you did was sit on the couch watching tv. You're morbidly obese, it's mcdonalds fault you can't stop eating. Your tires went bald and one blew out, it's toyota's fault for not having a light to remind you to change your tires. It is easier to point fingers than to take responsibility.

The no older than 3-4 year GMC Sierra frame i was next to in traffic today looked very similar to the o5 frame shots pictured above.

Serious man... we all know that, we are NOT disputing that. That is not what him and I, or any other person on our side is saying..... what were saying is most of the guys know this, so why aren't they taking care of it. Thats all, and it irritates the hell outta me. That being said....

When it cools off this summer, I'm doing an entire recoat in POR, just haven't had the motivation while I was in Cape Cod. Stuff is worth its weight in gold.

I agree , you should take care of your own vehicle , including cleaning , brushing and painting surface rust on your frame , I know I do , and will continue to do .

What my problem is that if the factory frame paint is showing failure after 6 months , even if you do your best to stay on top of the areas you can see , you are fucked for the areas you can't see or get at .

I'm not really sure why you're blaming a rapper when in fact the issue is this PC nanny state society we live in. You sound like an out of touch old guy when you say things like we live in the enimem age, the guy isn't even relevant anymore lol
