Show up in March with the book a few nights per week then at the end pay the $15 to take the multiple choice test and walk out with your Technician license.

Or upgrade from Technician to General in April.

See attached PDFs or follow above link for more details.

Forgot to mention that Technician is first of three classes of amateur radio. General is the next higher class granting you access to more frequencies down low. Amateur Extra is the highest class.

I've been studying to upgrade from Tech to General with some audio books. I'm almost ready to take the test. Got an email from Elk Grove-Galt CERT last night about these classes.

I'm just seeing this now. So it's already 2 classes passed, probably too late to start with the 3rd class on 3/13.

Yes, Technician is the first step. about 50% of Amateur Radio operators are at this level. Gives you access to 2 meter and 70 cm frequencies. Those are what most people use while mobile (handlheld or in a vehicle).

The next level is General. This opens up more privileges. Mostly the stuff people use in a building to talk long range to the other side of the planet.

The last level is Extra. Even more privileges.

I got my got my Technician 10 years ago. Then upgraded to General a few months back as self-punishment for 'winging' the technician test.

Anyone know of any upcoming cram sessions? I can't commute down for those times, but could do an entire Saturday.

I don't. When I did my General I used an Audio book. Just listened to it during my commute then when and took the next test I could find.

Yeah, but there are actually at least 5 people that want/need to do it. I'm pretty sure that the Audiobook idea wouldn't really work very well for everyone.

According to http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-class Petaluma has a bunch on 1 day classes.

    more info http://smrs.us

There were some other options further south but not single day. I limited my search to CA. There might be some stuff in NV.

Nice! Yeah, we're already heading down to Santa Rosa this Saturday - we might register for the Petaluma class on the 11th, otherwise it'll be 9/8.
    Thanks!!!

...on a side note, I really with that webpage had a search option to filter out classes that are days > 1.

So, I just passed my technician exam yesterday after attending a cram session in Rancho Cordova hosted by Tyler at My Off Road Radio. He does them every few months, and they aren't free, but for ~$150 you get:
    • The one-day cram session, including dinner and the cost of taking the actual exam
    • A quality handheld radio that he pre-programs with NorCal repeaters that are frequently used for wheeling
    • Access to an online class he has set up that was really useful to prepare.
Obviously it is effective - I'm an idiot and I passed, and of the 20 or so people there yesterday I didn't see anyone who didn't pass. It was also cool learning the material with an eye toward offroad use, as opposed to the usual HAM classes taught by dudes who just really like building radios.

Even if you don't want to do one of the classes I'd check out Tyler's site, he has a bunch of free content around offroad amateur radio that is really useful as well as some useful paid content.

I don't know the dude's last name - found his site through a couple of interviews he did on Youtube/podcasts around using HAM radio for offroading. He wheels a 4Runner and has been recording some episodes for the HS4x4 podcast.
