Been lurking on these forums forever. Just traded my 13 Limited Taco for a 22 TRD Pro 5 weeks ago. After spending $54K, I now have a metal on metal sound in the front driver area (2K miles in) It happens when I get in the car, make turns at low speeds, or brake rapidly. Dealer 1 claimed all was good & that “the upper ball joint” sometimes make that noise. I was pissed. Will never go back to that dealer. My home dealer is going to check at my appointment next Friday. After my own inspections, it sounds like the noise is coming from front body mounts, although there it’s hard to fully pinpoint due to hard access. Is this problem still a thing almost into 2023?!

Keep this updated with what they have to say. My offroad has about 5k on it currently and I just started noticing that while doing a low speed turn I have a click/clunk sound coming from the front drivers side.

it almost sounds like a CV joint starting to go bad. I’m gonna crawl under there tomorrow to see if I have a torn boot or something but I seriously doubt that’s what the problem is.

The large TRD skid plate makes noise as well, I've had to remove it and grease friction points.

This is exactly what I have. I initially thought torn axle, but I’ve engaged 4x4 once going straight on a soft muddy trail. I’m still thinking body mount.

Latest update. I took it to Right Toyota (Scottsdale), they said it’s fine. I took it to Big Two (Chandler, AZ), I am on my way to pick it up. Service rep said he had his guy looking at it for 2 hours. Body mount is fine & everything is fine. He literally says they have no clue where the noise is coming from, but supposedly they have trucks that sound just the same. I am getting really angry with this. I am going to contact Toyota. I have an appt with the original dealer. I couldn’t find anything myself, but if I have to take the car apart myself to find a fix, I will do it.

I still believe the issue to be the body mount in the front driver. Click on the video to hear the awesome grinding with the microphone right next to the part (headphone users beware). I contacted toyota support. Will also purchase greaser to throw on this to see if it can’t loosen up.

Any experience with toyota support on an issue such as this?

That noise sounds an awful lot like a bad front body mount bushing.

You can't tell the bushing is bad just by looking at it it has to be taken apart and inspected. Those dealers are being lazy. This is extremely common no way they have never seen this before.

Also "had his guy looking at it for two hours"? Really? He could've had the bushing out in 20 minutes.

A few things to try. Have someone rock the vehicle while you listen to that area. Some have fixed a front end squeak by spraying the bottom of the spring with a little silicone spray as the spring was creaking on the seat.

Everything with the suspension is good. The sound is definitely coming from the far front driver side body mount from what I can tell. If you lightly place your finger on the metal/bushings can feel the vibration emitting from very close by.

I agree it’s BS they didn’t even take it apart to inspect. When I got to the dealer yesterday, literally every service guy was gone lol. I doubt he gave it more than a 15-20 min look. My home base dealer is scheduled Friday. Going to give them direct instructions on where I want them to check. & going to request they lubricate if they don’t find issues after taking it apart. Could just not be tight enough. If any push back, I will go straight to the sales manager.

Regardless, this has been a very frustrating experience. When I got this thing off the line it had warped rotors. Makes me wonder if Toyota production is going downhill. There’s a reason we elect to get a Toyota over a Ford/Chevy. I guess I just got the bad egg.

I will update after my service appt Friday.

The problem usually isn't the front body mounts, it's the factory not lining up the cab perfectly. The front body mounts are the softest/shittiest ones on the truck, so they get taken out the fastest. When you take the lower nuts off you can see the upper bolt is usually crooked going down through the holes. Can be a real pain to line it back up yourself.

I Fixed it. Can confirm it was the body mount. I got silicone grease & sprayed on top, below & in-between. It’s hard to access without taking off the fender flare & wheel well liners, but there were a few holes I was able to shoot through. Sprayed it on there & waited for 30 minutes. Took it for a drive, silence. I am calling Earnhardt (home dealer) who I have an appointment with Friday & explaining my situation. Not going to waste my time with another dealer who won’t replace.

Otherwise I will be going to a third party for an opinion on whether to replace or not. I hope this thread will help others in the future. Very terrible customer service from these service departments.

Yeah this is a temporary fix though it does confirm your suspicion of a bad body mount. It should be enough evidence for the dealer to replace it although they will only replace it with oem.

There are better quality aftermarket bushings out there if you want to replace them yourself. If you go this route consider doing both sides and as pointed out by @aturk be sure the bolts are straight so they don't rub through again.
    Best of luck.

I appreciate your help & information. I probably will go the route of replacing both sides with an aftermarket option once I get my bonus in December. Like you said OEM is just going to be the same issue down the line.

Appreciate everyone’s input here. Great first post on this site!

I have this current problem rn. I silicone spray every 2 weeks or so. If it rains i gotta re spray, kind of annoying. Lmk how your after market bushings worked out. I need to look into it.

Is there an update? Did you get after market bushings?
