Like mentioned earlier 5th gen and also 4th gen (from the Sport model) larger brakes willl work. You’d need the rotors, calipers, pads, and don’t forget a 17inch rim or larger. These won’t fit with a 16inch rim

i switched to semi metallic pads on my last car and kept the stock rotors. that was a massive upgrade for performance. much more bite, easier modulation, and less fade, and it wasn't subtle. not sure if it matters but those were Carbotech Bobcats.

I'm at a complete loss here. What kind of driving are folks doing with their Tacomas that they feel that race car brakes are a necessity?

Is this for rock crawling, high speed corning/drifting, stop and go traffic on steep grade highways?

I have always felt that Tacomas, even my 1st gen has great brakes for a truck. They stop, and stop fast.

And yes, brake fade is heat related. Is someone riding the brakes going down hills?
If so, stop doing that! Pick a speed you want to go down the hill, say 50mph.
Coast up to 50mph and then brake firmly to drop your speed down to 40mph reasonably quick. Then coast back up to 50mph.
While you are coasting, the brakes have time to cool. Rinse and repeat.
    Stay off the brakes otherwise.

If this isn't it, I don't get where your brake fade is coming from. :notsure:

Yeah honestly I agree and I think the brakes are just fine, I just added some info, mostly to remind anyone interested that bigger brakes means bigger wheels if you have the 16s

    Quick tid bit.

5th Gen 4Runner brake calipers do NOT clear 3rd Gen TRD Sport 17" rims.

For a stock truck they are probably fine. But once you add big wheels, big tires., and even more weight(armor, camping gear, etc etc) Brake upgrades/enhancements become almost a necessity. Can also depend on your driving habits too

I can completely understand the extra weight/tires requiring upgraded brakes. Is that what is going on here? That's why I was asking what changed that requires the upgrade over stock.

Driving habits on the other hand are usually cheaper to change than parts are.

It’s a lot easier to just downshift and then not really use the brakes at all.

    Because stock is boring
If I'm not going fast, it's because of traffic or cops xD

Wilwood just released the Tacoma big brake kit a few days ago. You must have been too busy with all of your other projects to notice. The Wilwood web site added them last Thursday and I called to verify that they are available for delivery at this time and they are. The first link is to their web site and the second link is to a reseller that is offering them for $199 off retail.

I also posted the kit on the FJ Cruiser forums and member Iconic_ posted up a few rather interesting points about the Wilwood Kit and the OEM brakes that we have.

    Iconic_ posted:
What you posted earlier is pretty interesting. It says the combined piston area is 4.86 square inches for the 6 piston calipers. One of them is 44.45 mm diameter, the other 2 pistons are 31.75 mm diameter. To confirm, adding up their area for one side of the pistons is equal to their combined area as published by Willwood of 4.86 square inches. These are numbers I was never able to find with the TRD BBK.

Now if you do the same math, stock FJC calipers with qty two 45.5mm pistons are 5.04 square inches. And 5th gen T4R calipers with qty two 48 mm pistons are 5.6 square inches.

Willwood rotor size: 12.88" at 1.1" thick (18" wheels min)
    14.00" at 1.1" thick (17" wheels min)
    5th Gen T4R rotor size: 13.3" at 1.25" thick (17" wheels min)

I'm not trying to poke holes, I'm just a numbers guy! biggrin_de158ca58ad78ad82f6181a31798252d5791eb73.gif

So assuming the Willwood kit has a larger pad area, this will help with heat dissipation and the pad will wear more evenly and last longer because it has more material. And who's to say that more front brake bias with the 5th gen kit is better? I'd like to think so due to weight transfer while braking when lifted and with bigger tires but who knows?
