JIS screws are just little different at the head. I've saved many a damaged screw by trying a JIS bit instead of the regular Phillips. And Vessel makes some nice screwdrivers. It just seats "better" in the screw.

    Good luck with removal.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Japanese products don't use Phillips heads. The JIS is different enough that a Phillips screwdriver will wreck it...as you've found.

I bet holding a soldering iron to the head of the screw would do it... soften up the plastic enough to release the threads.

I've had success using small vice grips in those situations.

You want to go with the small needle nose vice grip and at latch onto the screw head like it was a bolt, 90 degrees, clamp the grip as tight as possible, make sure you have the bracket in a vice or really good grip on it.

Might seem odd, but I have found that tightening the fastner then loosening it can work on stubborn threads. Having an impact drive helps but I would try to do it by hand first.

I try to nip it from the side and use a screwdriver. Thats what I had to do for IAC valve screws.

a plier with a concave head as opposed to a flat head, a lot less slippage!
