Did the front and rear diffs today. The oil from the front diff gushed out so fast, I think almost a quart of it overshot the can that was supposed to catch it. Is it weird that after 60K, the front diff plug was the only one to have shavings on it?

I changed all my fluids a week ago and a question I have is: "was it necessary to change the transfer case if I rarely use 4WD?" There's 190,000 miles but I'll bet there's not 1,000 4WD miles.

Same experience here. Did mine at 90k and front diff was dark black and had shavings on the plug. Transfer case and rear diff looked good though

Just a little info. About a year or so ago I had the front and rear diff fluid changed with the Valvoline diff fluid. supposedly this fluid is supposed to have the limited slip additive built into it. Well over time I started to feel a chatter/shudder when turning hard left and right. So I changed the fluid again myself. This time I put in BG Products Ultra Guard Full Syn fluid https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/drive-line/bg-ultra-guard-full-synthetic-gear-lubricant/#bg-product-6 with their Limited Slip additive and the chatter/shudder has gone away https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/driv...-slip-axle-additive-concentrate/#bg-product-7

    Yeah.
The whole limited slip thing is confusing. I think the Valvoline gear oil is compatible with LSDs, but you still have to use an additive -- but only if you have a true mechanical LSD and not the electronic Auto LSD.

And again, to window's question, regardless of 4WD usage, I would recommend changing every 60K miles. That oil sitting in there for 5 years or so is probably not in the best shape.

I hadn't thought about the time aspect. Other than it's the hardest one to get to, another quart of oil as long as I'm buried under there isn't that big of a deal no matter the mileage.
    Thanks.
