sorry to resurrect an old thread but i have a leak on my transfer case and when i pulled the fill plug pressure was let out of the case. It was a little surprising. Im guessing these breathers go bad?

Mine was under pressure when I pulled it with 200 miles on a week old truck.

As crazy as it sounds, at least some of these are / were one way valves.

ive ordered the ARB Breather kit and i plan on using that see if that will fix my weeping transfer case. (my expectations are low that it will work but if i can maintain neutral pressure in the case i think i have a better chance then + pressure)

For the record if you are on your back trying to reach these breathers sitting on top of the transmission bell housing you have to be stretch armstrong to access them. I think a better way it to reach through the driver side wheel well for anatomically normal people.

I can confirm that the factory metal caps are one ways. The dorman replacements are true breathers. Strange

I have replaced the one way check valve with an ARB type breather set up. Each drive was creating pressure in the transfer case.

The easiest way to run the new hose from the engine bay down and then pull the hose off of the barb on the top of the transfer case. Unclip the next 3 clips holding the vent hose in place from the underside of the transmission and then pull to release the clip on the top side of the bell housing. Cut off the factory one way valve. Connect the 1/8 barb and 1/8 npt female to the hose compression fitting. Put hose back on the transfer case barb

Pull the hose up through the engine bay and connect to a true breathers. Zip tie to your hearts desire and have a beer.

does it seem like it worked out to stop your leaking/weeping? my T case is slow leaking as well and looks like it's where it mates to the Transmission. did you connect both transfer case breathers to the arb kit or just one?

Nope it didn't, I have a few options first I'm going to clean it and pull a few case half bolts and put some sealant on the bolts. I suspiciously saw drops coming from a few bolts and it makes sense since that's the least thick sealing surface. 2nd option if that doesn't work is pulling the actuator. Dropping the rear drive shaft and pulling the case back, cleaning and resealing the surface.

3rd option came in the mail this morning

@blitzkrieg3002 Also 1 of the 2 breathers goes to the case and the other is the actuator. I didn't bother with the actuator because it's not a sealed unit

awesome man, I may have to look into that. mine does appear to have some leakage at the T case halfs as well. after warranty expried and 2 previous failed attempts to fix it under warranty, toyota then tried to charge me over $3k to split the cases and re seal.

Yeah I called Toyota just for S&G but they didn't return the call. Permatex sells a differential specific sealant and I got a tube for step 1 and 2

I'm half hoping first option works well enough atleast for me to get to the spring. I hate working on a cold concrete floor. Low is 23 today.

Are all of them 1 way on our trucks? What year do you have? Toyota does make true breathers. I ordered one to do the rear diff breather from them and it is basically just a barb with a metal cap.
