    I have a 2017 Taco Limited.
There are clips on the gas tank shield that are plastic. One of them vibrated off and the shield was rubbing on the boot that protects the transition from the tranny to the drive shaft.
Anyone else have this problem. It seems like it should be quite common seeing how those clips are flimsy plastic.

Yeah, I had the front plastic pin fall out, I guess...... It caused the shield to rub on the driveshaft.....

I went to dealer and bought that freakin' $7.00 plastic pin....!!! Rip-off man....

If it happens again, I'll just cut that front portion of the shield off.

I don’t understand why that wouldn’t be covered under warranty.

can one of you provide a pic? this looks like something that can and should be corrected before a cheesy clip becomes a problem causer.

Edit: that white clip is an aftermarket clip I installed to hold it until I can get the dealer to replace the broken clips.

P.S. the boot has been damaged as well because of the shield rubbing into it.

Here’s the part number for those looking for that boot. I went on a wild goose chase to find it and the dealer did not have it in stock so I had them order it to make sure it was in stock for when I brought my truck in.

I looked at your pic again...it does look like your other clips are like mine (rear ones).... that front one is the one they just put in, right..??

    Weird looking thing.

OP, you have the short box, right..? That's why mine (long box) rubbed on the shaft and not the boot, I guess.!

Was it the clip that chewed up your boot? If so, I’d bring it into Toyota for replacement.

The white one is one that I put in there until the dealership fix’s it. I have a whole clip set that I bought but apparently that was the one clip I didn’t have.

I’m taking it in to toyota for them to replace but they are giving me the run around saying they have to inspect it before they can warrantee it. Then I called and wanted to make sure they had the part because I’m not bringing my truck into them twice because there is no dealership close to where I live.

It’s not going to be a pleasant conversation if they don’t warrantee it. That’s just obsurd they would put a plastic clip underneath the truck. Those should be metal bolts.

Just reading before I go outside to look at mine- your photo makes the boot look chewed up on the outer edge of that center rib! Was that part of the damage from the shield or clip?

Edit: looks like mine was done right with heavier duty clips- or does it look like the same clips as yours?

Thank you for responding. The more people who report this should call for a recall.

Yes those are the same clips.
I edited my previous post and notated that the white clip you see in the photo is one I put there for temporary resolution.
Also yes my boot has been damaged from the shield rubbing it.
So that’s why I posted the part number because it’s super hard to find that boot and if you take it in to the dealer they most likely won’t have it in stock.

That is exactly THE clip (with the green crayon marks) that went missing on my 2016. the front of that aluminum shield then got bent backwards and rubbed on the shaft (long box).... Not sure what caused it to bend back, but it could just be the wind and rain spray as that shield is about as tough as tin foil..!! Toyota quality...:puke::brianr:
