yea the factory sport short bolts won’t work. If u do get a hook get those bolts in the deal. They’re not expensive but I’d have to dig up the separate part number. The tow hook is cheap from the dealer if it’s on sale. Every now & then some used ones go on sale on TW. I just bought a new one so I’d get the bolts too. Mine was 30% off & about the same price range used ones were going for on here

The TRD OR hook is a good recovery point but you should avoid recovering someone from it. Your differential gears are much weaker pulling in reverse and if the recovery point on the vehicle you are yanking on fails it is coming right back through your windshield.

Much better option is to use the receiver with a D-ring hitch and pull from the back of your truck.

You can find used TRD tow hooks for like $40-50, add another $8 for grade 8 bolts. It's kind of a funky metric thread if they don't come with the bolts, i forget the size but want to say it was 1.5mm per thread.

You don't need the TRD skid plate, it will fit back there you just won't have access to the little baby hook in the back.

Surely you mean grade 10.9 or 12.9 since it's metric.

I finally pulled the trigger on an ARB. I get it when people balk at the price. But, with my taco pulling a scout trailer often 1000's of miles away from home, with just me and the wife, I need to make sure I dont have recovery point failure to make things worse. I wasn't a fan of the all red, so I painted mine up. Also, just to see, I tried reinstalling the Y bracket back over top, and it fit fine. Everything flushed up and tightened up, so I went ahead and put it back on. May as well I figured. 20210616_123614.jpg 20210621_145814.jpg 20210622_230905.jpg

It's installed the only way it can be installed to get a tow strap on it. Buy one and install it, you'll see.
ps; you don't get a designed and engineered TRD tow hook and mounting bolts for 15 bucks, and the folks at the other end of the tow strap don't really care which way the hook is pointed LOL

For what its worth, if my memory serves me correct, the first gen 4runners stock tow hook from the factory is just like that but with an extra piece/ clip that will enclose the loop. They are mounted like yours.

Nice! What is the intended purpose of the Y-bracket?

The Y bracket is part of the original ARB mounting hardware. Directions for the recovery point show it being removed and left off. But I found in my case it would mount just as it had before, without effecting anything, so I simply just pit it back in with the recovery point in place. I figured if it fits and doesn't obstruct anything, then why not go ahead and have the extra support.

Thanks. Just ordered one that comes with spring clip to keep tow strap in place if I need to mount upside down.
