My fuel door started rubbing the paint on the truck (left side of fuel door as I'm opening it) and creating a spot near the gas cap where it hits. It's a noticeable grinding as I'm opening the door. I had the body shop at the dealer look at it today and he pointed out that the bottom hinge looks cracked and is rusting. Like it was forced and broke.

Not a big problem really besides rubbing off the paint might cause it to rust near the gas cap. Also, the door will probably fall off eventually.

I know that the fuel doors on these Tacomas have had a few problems with rust and falling off. It seems to me like the bottom hinge on mine rusted and is cracking the hinge, creating this problem. I'm at 57000 miles on my truck. Do I have a case to get this covered under the 5yr 60000 rust warranty? Does anyone have experience with this?

I got quoted at $147 to replace and paint a new fuel door.

Machine gun mount. Would love to blow the shit out of it since it has nothing but issues. QA at Toyota USA is shit. Start making them in Japan for Christ's Sake!

My fuel door is doing the exact same thing, Bugs me to no end, but I only think about it every 300 miles or so, interested to see what the fix is, didn't notice the bottom hinge cracked but will inspect further tomorrow.

I had the same issue. I sprayed the hinge with WD-40. It removed the rust and has kept the rust from returning. Spray it once a year.

Mine did the same thing....rubbed the paint, bottom hinge hosed.
My dealer fixed it before my 3/36 ran out.
A few folks here & on TN have had the same issue.
I do the same as steivietyles does & keep an eye on it....
A couple of posts I have seen around that bottom hinge snaps off..

I sprayed some WD-40 on it. At the least I hope that the hinge doesn't fall off on me. I can live with a crappy fuel door but I don't want to have to pay for a new one.

Somebody else bought a new fule door for $75 and had to pay almost $100 to get it painted....what a rip!! The fuel door design is a piece of crap. Looks and feels like something I made in 6th grade Metal Shop. Keep hitting it with the WD-40 and that should tie you over.

wish there was a cool aftermarket version of the door like we see on other vehicles.

Aftermarket??? yes; Cool? No. They make a chrome door, but unless you want your truck to look like you get your ideas from the VautoZone Catalog we're screwed.....Pass!!!!

Just a solution to stop the door from scrapping on the inside lower part would be nice.

If yours is doing that, then your fuel door hinge is probably broken on the lower hinge. It shouldn't be scrapping.

Yea, I tried writing up the discrepancy in my trucks 781's, but sheet metal shop wouldn't bite unless I could get MOC to input the writeup into GO81. So for now its on a diagonal - and might get pushed to the K's until I get a chance to look at it after I get back from McM.

yeah I was thinking the same thing...nasa..
I know the dealer didn't replace mine when they fixed it
I think they did some techical procedure like stick a screwdriver w/ its tip wrapped in tape and bent the hinge so it wouldn't rub.

Sorry guys, it was for the AF guys who do, or who have worked in maintenance. (the person who posted above me was AF 1st shirt, so I took a stab and figured he might get it).

It means I know about the problem, but probably wont get to it until I have some time after I get back from McMurdo station. (not to mention trying to dupe sheet metal to fixing something on my truck instead of the plane - Still working on my first cup of coffee- sorry!)

My truck is doing this now too. 15k miles on mine. I don't jam the door when i open it so this hinge must really suck. I fixed first time by bending back with long screw driver but its back. Any better ideas? It is the lower hinge.

I ended up using wd-40 on it. Doesn't rub any more and hasn't came back yet.probably have to lube it once or twice a year. Also good preventative maintenance for anyone who doesn't have this problem yet.
