ran 87 for the last 20k miles with no issues, but just switched back to 91 due to getting my truck OVtuned for it. Truck drives completly different know due to the tune and 91.

Imho it should have came this way from the factory

My 2020 3.5 runs its best on 87 regular. Tried several tankfuls of premium and mid grade. Truck doesn't put out the same power, it hunts on hills more and gets lower fuel economy.

I live in CO. I have lived here for 26+ years. I have always run midgrade (87 here) in all my vehicles - BMWs, and now my 1st Tacoma (2019). Never had a problem yet with any of my vehicles running 87 here.

Back in the 1980s my friend's dad was a manager at a locally owned gas station. The owner figured that the vast majority of his customers were regulars. Therefore he would occasionally pour a bag of sugar into the gasoline storage tanks. His reasoning was it would slowly gum up the engines of his regular customers thus reducing their gas mileage thus increasing the amount of gas they would buy. My friend's dad said it was a pretty common thing to do. There was this two stall auto repair gas station my dad used to take his car to to get oil changes and minor repairs done. The used oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, and antifreeze were dumped into the gasoline storage tanks. A lot of places dumped their used oil into the diesel storage tanks but this guy did not sell diesel. There was this old gas station that always sold gas cheaper than anyone in town. My friend walked in there just as a guy from the state was doing an inspection. The state guy was telling the gas station guy that he was watering down the gas and the gas was contaminated with something (don't recall what that was).

Haha for ones like me that owned a diesel for over a decade before getting a Tacoma in July.

I almost put diesel in the truck at Wawa the other week. Had the green nozzle in hand. Did a WTF! To myself and put it down.

I just ran my new Tacoma 2900 miles cross country from AZ to MA. I ran 87 or 86 octane all the was across. Unless the engine is tuned to run on higher octane fuel (tune or forced induction) it doesn’t make a significant difference. The higher the octane the slower the burn rate of the fuel, so running an octane higher than needed can decrease power.

Sure, but it does make a difference.

This would only happen if the ECU didn't adjust timing based on knock sensor feedback. This of course is not the case for modern engines.

I only run premium in the Tacoma because I have other cars at home that are premium only. Force of habit.

If the engine isn’t knocking on 87 octane then a higher octane has no benefit because the engine won’t advance the timing past a certain parameter. There was an article on fuel octane’s effect on a Ford Raptor, but those are forced induction and call for 91 or better stock.

    https://www.torquenews.com/3769/ford-f150-performance-reflects-octane-level-93-definitely-better

The 91 octane may have a better additive pack that provides benefits, but fuel for fuel on the Tacoma it shouldn’t matter.

You're right it won't advance past a certain parameter but that parameter is assuredly past optimal timing on exactly 87 octane. The actual octane of gas you get at any given pump is far from exact and modern engines are specifically equipped to optimally deal with that variance.

How far will it advance timing? That's a great question and can only be answered by digging into the Tacoma's ECU. The OVTune guys probably know. Is it lower than optimal timing on 93? Maybe. Is it lower than optimal timing on 91? Maybe. Is it higher than 87? Assuredly.

If your vehicle does not have preignition problems due to high compression, the higher octane, which increases the ignition level, makes no difference in explosion power.

    However,
Shell and several others do add very nice fuel additives to clean injectors and other fuel system parts as a incentive to buy their top grade product. Shell Techron additive for example.

However, even though Techron is darn near a miracle cleaner for fuel system, you may be better off just adding a pint of stand alone pure Techron to your tank occasionally.
    https://www.amazon.com/Chevron-Techron-Concentrate-System-Cleaner/dp/B00092893E

Remember Octane only controls ignition temp. of gas. Only.

That article is so full of bad and wrong information or just ignorance it's depressing. Higher octane fuel does not burn slower. The flame front speed difference, all else equal, is essentially identical. Flame front speed is very much dependant on the conditions that exist inside the combustion chamber, including charge temp, pressure, mixture ratio and cc shape. Higher octane fuel just resists ignition more than lower octane fuel.

The Ford ecoboost recommend 91+ but don't require it.

While you are correct about the EFI system/ECU not advancing ignition timing beyond a certain point, on very modern systems that point is usually very much a perfect conditions scenario of max torque angle for peak cylinder pressure which is usually impossible with pump gas. This is done to ensure that the system is always up against the max performance and efficiency envelope. I'm not saying that the current Tacoma engine/system is like this but I'm guessing that it is. Logging the ECU should show one way or another of higher than 87 octane shows any advanced timing. If it does, then the question is, "does it make any measurable difference?" My 13 year old Subaru is this way, as is my wife's 8 year old car. The more recent systems are so good at detecting even the smallest/lightest detonation events that constantly bouncing off the "knock threshold" is of no harm to the engine.

Here is a short, easy to understand article on octane and what it does and doesn't do.
