Just upgraded from stock wheels to 17x8.5s with 285/70r17`s
Should I go with a full-size spare to match or would it be fine to go with a slightly smaller size?? (Like a 260 instead of 285)?

IMO you'll be OK with the regular spare. It is still a full size tire, not the donut they put in many cars. It is a little smaller than what you have but close enough to use as a spare. Of course if you can make it fit and just want to do it go for it. Having a spare the same size is always best

If you plan to go off-road get the full size

Yea, I want to do offroading, but would a skinnier tire work the same as the full? I'm looking for a full size to put on the stock spare rim...

Skinny is fine if it's the same diameter

    Stock-ish
It'll still move, it'll still drive down the highway, but it might pull a bit to the smaller tires side if placed in front, and some people will say you will blow your diff up if you run a slightly smaller sized tire in the rear on the street, but its fine.

    Got it
so if I used a 17x8 spare wheel instead of a 17x8.5, I’d be fine?

The wheel size doesn't matter, it's the size of the tire.

Just get the other tire fixed asap and put it back on. Spare is just that emergency spare.

If i buy new wheels, i buy 5 new wheels and 5 new tires. Then the spare matches, and you can do a 5 wheel rotation and get way more milage out of your tires.
