Just picked up my 2024 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4cyl turbo. Only drove it a dozen times if that and today, with under 200 miles on the truck the engine failed. I was at an intersection waiting to make a left and the van across from me wasn't paying attention and I hit the gas to get out of his way and avoid a collision. Turbo kicked in and then warning lights flashed everywhere on dash.... oil pressure low/collision warning malfunction/other malfunctions and a message saying "visit your dealer" and the engine started to slowly lose power. Started to hear loud ticking from engine. Pulled over, shot off and turn on again and same. Called service and told them and asked if I can still drive it in..of course they wouldn't say yes or no. I decided that I will drive to dealership only 10 minutes away. On way there service called me to tell me they they are expecting me. While on phone the engine continued to lose more power until it just died. Flat bed arrived and there was oil everywhere under the truck. When dealership looked at it the oil was coming from somewhere on the top side of the engine and at that point there was not a drop oil left in the engine. Because it has under 200 miles Toyota has to get involved. I am now carless, no offer of a loaner, holiday weekend and I now have buyers remorse. Unless it falls under the state lemon at some point I will end up with a nightmare truck back. Anyone out here have any similar problems?

    Wow that sucks.

Did you take any pictures of your new truck, either before or after you could share?

Shit happens. They’ll either fix it or buy it back. If they fix it it’s not a nightmare truck, same if they buy it back. Check your warranty, I’m pretty sure it says Toyota covers a loaner or rental for extended warranty work.

I'm going to call Toyota direct. The dealership told me no loaners.. rental only. Hopefully they buy it back because from personal experience when you buy something and it is screwed up like this it is usually the shape of things to come. I guess we will see.

Good they will take care of you, Toyota has a Transportation Assistance Policy to cover your rental or loaner. There are some other guys waiting for repairs and it’s included as part of the warranty. The inconvenience and timing just sucks though. Hope you keep us posted on what they find out for the cause… That’s some rotten luck.

Sorry to hear this, so far there haven't really been any engine issues to speak of. That's very bad luck. I'm curious on the procedure to remove and replace the engine on the 24? The worst part will be waiting for the replacement. I don't blame you for thinking it might be a lemon going forward, that's been my experience with some vehicles as well. They really are great trucks when they are issue free, it's rare that I say I'd buy another of something I've already owned. Hoping for the best for you.

See what plays out before you go to the dark side is my advise. Mechanical failure can happen to anyone anytime on anything . It doesn’t mean the truck is a lemon . Stuff just happens. That’s what the warranty is for. As long as they make good , take one thing at a time . Good luck!

If the truck shit the bed, blew an oil gasket, and he drove it to complete failure, it’s toast. Sure, the engine can possibly be rebuilt or replaced, but I sure wouldn’t want to go down that path.

The owner needs to check his states lemon law. He probably can’t take any action for 30 days unless Toyota does a buy back. They probably will after initial inspection.

Sure it wasn’t the oil filter that blew off? I heard early reports of that happening

Thanks... love the color. I'll get an update on Wednesday they said. I can live with a bit of inconvenience but definitely not looking forward to the start of on going issues and a domino effect. Going to be hard to trust the engine if I get the same truck back. I hope I'm wrong!

I'm not sure of anything except that there was no oil in the engine and the oil was blowing out from somewhere on top of the engine, which is what the manager told me. But being the caring dealer it is they seemed like they were in no hurry to do anything. When it happens at 12 noon and they tell you that since it's so late in the day on a Friday we won't be able to do much till after the weekend. I have no faith in them but they are the only dealership within 2 hours of me and they got you by the short hairs in times like this!

I appreciate the positive response. I tend to go to the dark side first.

Sucks it had to happen on a Friday long weekend. It is true though that they couldn’t touch it until Tuesday . They probably want an FTS(field technical specialist) to come out and look at it. He’s a mechanic directly from Toyota. Typically there’s only 1-2 of those guys in most regions

Agreed. And after they see it's faulty, you'll get your loaner. Pretty crappy they just didn't give you one anyway. I wouldnt use that dealer again personally.
