An unfortunate situation OP. But stuff breaks sometimes, happens to everyone. This time you got the short straw. It'll be to some degree, inconvenient, time consuming, and/or expensive. It sucks, but it goes that way sometimes. Good luck.

It's an entertaining read though. So many hurt feelies out there.

It took every ounce of discipline not to to lose it. I'm a hot headed Italian but I lost it on them the next day. Sometimes it gets you nowhere and sometimes (most times) getting aggressive and not backing down is the only way to let someone know you ain't fkn around and you get results. Thanks for the positive wishes. She is doing OK and feels bad thinking this would not have happened if she didn't have a Dr appointment. Told her it would have happened no matter what ..just shitty timing. It's a waiting game now. Again.. thank you

All personal choice but if you total your own car the same thing happens right? Unless you think you’re more likely to get into an accident in a rental, you don’t need the rental insurance.

Also some credit cards provide rental insurance if you book with that card.

Stuff breaks and shit happens but we don't have to like it...know what I mean? Time and inconvenience I can deal with ... expensive is my worry.

    Genesis does the same.
I'll schedule an oil change for my wife's GV70 SUV. They'll come to my house and pick up the car.
They'll schedule a time to return it. And leave her a new loaner to drive while her car is gone.

Luxury brands (and their dealers) operate quite differently.

I’m not great at math but I think that total cost is still within the amount Toyota said they will reimburse.

As mentioned by others check what your credit cards offer. I know two or three of mine offer rental car insurance if you pay using the card.

The only question is whether Toyota would reimburse for optional insurance. OP might want to call Toyota back and ask.

I also find it strange that Lexus are the guinea pigs for Toyotas new creations. You'd think itd be the other way around.

I suppose that could be dissected to, people who drive Lexus are more likely then not, wealthy (broadbrushing work with me) and it may stand to be reasonable to assume a person with "Lexus" money probably doesnt care if their motor is shot as long as they get something to drive in the interim....i dunno im stretching

But weird, that the rx350 and rx500h got the t24a first and now in full swing theres issues in the Tacoma.

If they cover it I guess it’s a no-brainer, but maybe you’ll want to rent an SUV or a truck instead of whatever the minimum rental cost gets you…unless your quote was for something other than a compact.

Update: Dealership just called me. Engine toast. There is no fix for it. Here is what they said: It was some nipple where the oil filter is that blew off the engine and spit all the oil out of the engine. The dealership has now put a request in for a new engine. They cannot say right now how long that will take. They gave me a number for Toyota Business Development (800-331-4331) to call for update on the engine delivery if it isn't here within a couple weeks. We discussed lemon law and Toyota buy back if vehicle is going to be laid up for 30 days or more. That's about it until I hear from someone. I have my own reservations about having a dealer installed motor rather than a whole new truck. I also asked how this would effect me at resale given it might come up in some Carfax report but he said the engine swap won't... I do not believe that at all. So the waiting game begins and today day 5.

After reading through this thread, it seems you may be better off and slightly happier taking your business elsewhere. I understand your next closest dealer is 2+ hrs away, so I'd suggest giving them a call, very respectfully climb the chain of command to fill the correct people in on whats going on, explaining that you don't feel confident in your local dealer completing this work/they've not given any help towards a rental for the unknown amount of months you will be without your truck. It may be beneficial to ask what they can do for you, which should hopefully entail having Toyota tow the vehicle to their dealership for the work, providing you a rental, and you never having to make a 4+ hr round trip. Sounds like the vehicle requires a new engine, and you have no obligation to allow your local dealer to be the one that does it. Gladly take that warranty work money and give it to the next closest dealer, providing they agree to take care of you a little better. Maybe you can explore lemon/buy-back with them and wash your hands of it. It sounds like a messy situation, but there's plenty of dealers out there who would happily take warranty work. There's tons of money to be made on buying a 'barely used' truck back, getting paid to work on it/drop a new engine in, and sell it as 'barely used' with "no record of it on carfax." I'm willing to bet your dealer would find a way to put you in a loaner if you gave them a call to have them prepare the truck for shipment to another dealer. Or maybe they still wouldn't, in which case, don't give them your business if you're not happy with their service. Sure, its not mandated that they give you a loaner, I'm not suggesting that it is; but there are still plenty of dealers out there willing to listen and offer it in these cases.

As someone who has been through a buyback…first, this a terrible experience to happen with a new truck. No one should have to deal with this. Second, as you say the waiting game begins. My advice: do not call them to hurry it along; every day (regardless of whether they’re actually working on it) counts for the 30. Also, it can be 30 non-consecutive days. Third, get the rental. They will reimburse you as part of the lemon process. Fourth, if it does get lemoned, you’ll want every receipt for any out-of-pocket associated with this; they’re also reimburseable.

Just a heads up on that. The one time I’ve had to submit receipts for reimbursement, it took about 3 months to get a check. This was like 2 years ago.

Yuck. Though I reckon better off ultimately as the entire engine will be new. Curious how that nipple thing is happening..

This. Don't nudge them along, the clock ticks in your favour right now if you're really hoping for a lemon law.

I do agree the sounds of it doesn't sound like the local is doing much of anything more than bare minimum. Can't tell me they couldn't have asked corporate to do something re loaner, even if still no the dealer at least made their effort. Ask around in your local thread on here for a reco perhaps re another dealer to do the work. I alluded to it earlier here but I went through something like this with GM years ago and it sounds so far like a similar situation re the dealer just trying to worm around or not care.

Not only the receipts, @BronzoTaco ..start writing down/typing up a document with dates/times/who you spoke to, the whole shebang. Memory fades over time. Cross the T's, my man..and best wishes for your wife as well.

Thank you kindly. I started a timeline like I'm at a crime scene!! Already have my dates, times and names up to right now so far. I too coming would love to know the cause of the nipple coming off. They said it was something is never supposed to come off. I'm no mechanic but wonder if it might be some engine block plug that was never tightened correctly at the factory and got past QC

I worked for auto groups for over 10 years. Usually your service writer will set up a rental through the service department and automatically bill the rental to Toyota. They also get rentals cheaper through the rental companies for this purpose. However if you’re being a dk then they may not have explained that to you.
