I drove through the ford lot on the Sunday before I went to Toyota. I do not love the Ranger and so much and honestly can't drive a full size anymore although I love them. I would love the 2 door bronco but that is the most impractical and expensive everyday driver for me. I still DIY and need room to carry lumber and such. Looked at the Nissan Frontier also. Only a couple thousand cheaper with same options as Tacoma but resale not so great and I think they are ugly. I was even looking at 2023 used Tacomas but also only a few grand under new truck.

I am certainly considering an F150 for my needs. Comparing measurements on paper, it isn’t all that much bigger.

Test drove the new Tacoma, while I liked it, didn’t exactly blow my socks off. There are some considerable misses causing me to look elsewhere, reduced the size of the fuel tank, no real gains in mpg or payload, and to think they started with a clean sheet for this new platform.

Not sure “Well it is a Toyota!” is holding much weight anymore. What a cluster…

LOL. All these people rushing to final conclusions, "Toyota sucks... it's over.. I'm buying a Ford.."

What do you expect for the first model year of a new generation?

Look what happened w/ the 2005 Tacomas blowing head gaskets.. The first year of the 2nd gen Tacomas. They TSBed that issue & later versions of the 2nd gens are highly respected as being ultra-durable trucks...

There is NO REASON whatsoever to buy the first model year of anything except the urge to "be first to have the newest latest greatest thing in my city / town / neighborhood". There is EVERY REASON to wait at least a full year, perhaps two full years, before buying.

I'm sure this will work out for OP just fine in the end, being a brand new truck etc., and I hope it does. Just saying that while somebody frequently has to go through this kind of thing for a new product revision -- that somebody doesn't have to be you.

You have step to the front of the line, assume the position, and ask for it.

It definitely doesn't hold weight anymore with me.... that was mistake looking back. I traded in a beautiful 4Runner 2022 TRD ORP for this. The 4runner was going to probably be my last vehicle but I really wanted another pick up instead to be last. I know I'm going to be that guy that hands over his keys early unlike my Dad who drove till 90 and crashed into everything! I love them and love the body style of the Tacoma. A bit skeptical about the 4 banger turbo, which I read 50/50 opinions on. When I drove it I loved it. Love the extra power it had, hate the smaller gas tank but not a deal breaker for me. It fits my needs perfectly. I have always had Ford trucks and SUV's prior to Toyota. I did have a short lapse in judgement that lasted a few months by buying a VW Toureg... WTF crack was I smoking? I got out of that so fast and took a $13k hit just to walk away. Had a couple of the old Rangers.. loved those. The overall body size of the F150 is what I don't want to deal with.. harder to park

Saturn had been doing the same model, either initially (think so) or at some point at least re buying from a Saturn dealership. IMO it's a better way to go plus far less intimidating especially for the average bear.

    Come on now lol
Toyota sold already over 100,000 Tacomas and maybe a few issues here and there . That’s a very low percentage .More than likely you’ll be fine . Enjoy the truck . The op here needs to ride the wave ., also even if he has to have a complete motor replacement That is better than replacing parts on the motor . It’s way less invasive . That’s why even with the tundra debacle that was a smart way to go for Toyota. They yank the cab pull the motor, put the new one in , put the cab back and it’s clean . It’s more invasive sometimes to remove the dash and change some of the vents . In the end , it got in the vehicle so what s really the difference. As long as it’s done by someone who is a real technician

Yeah Toyota will get it sorted, new platform growing pains. As for now keep the shit you already own, or buy Brand X and drive that for a few years until Toyota figures their shit out, who knows Brand X might serve one fairly well.

Honestly, it is a crap shoot anymore, and that goes for just about everything and anything. Have bought brand new appliances that failed the day they were installed.

Third gen here, first year, 2016, 147k and no issues, a few recalls, taken care off and all good!! Some with the same year, problems, we need to look at these trucks as a whole, overall great!! People wanting to buy a Ford, ok and good luck!!!
I did not have an "urge" when buying my truck, gave my 2001 to my son, I need something, if no one buys a first year, that would not make any sense, there a plenty of reasons to buy first year!!!!

Was going to say the same thing. Everything is a crap shoot. Lot's of stuff made like sht these days. Have to buy warranties. My induction range would cost a bundle to fix and had to get a $500 warranty!

    Lol!

*now looking for a low mile 2nd Gen unicorn* :D

Not built like they used to be! Our induction range on the oven didn’t work the day it was installed, they wouldn’t give us another one, had to wait a week for a technician to install another top.

Had the 1960s furnace replaced, new one a year later the blower motor went out. New stuff is shite…

My last 2 houses were new builds and even they are built like shyt. Studs off, lights off center, cheap appliances, chinese wall outlets that trip when you walk by, leaky windows... and you better find it all before the 1 year warranty runs out. A minute late and they tell you pound sand!

That engine has been in the works for years. Not a first year thing. Look at how they screwed the Tundra up. Too much not needed $tuff on these new engines to make them perform. Turbos, sensors, hybrids etc. Imagine the repair costs after the warranty ! New gen Taco next ?
I have a late model 2016, 1st year, over 7 years, with 0 issues other than a battery and a 3rd brake light leak.

When the dealer F'd up my door inspecting truck for the axle recall, it went to paint shop for 3 days. They offered me a loner- wrote it right on the invoice, I didn't need it.

I agree with a lot of us, BUT loyal Toyota people have been vocal for years about more up to date Tundras and Toyotas AND Toyota has been promising and tantalizing (maybe taunting is a better word) them for years. With all of that hype and those expectations, I expect some minor annoying bugs, recalls and issues with first year or three of new gens, but not engines and transmissions taking dumps left and right.

For that last sentence to be something other than hyperbole you would need an actual failure rate of transmissions and engines and statistics from other similar models (or prior year tacos) to compare it to.

I’ve yet to see someone on this forum post that type of actual data as opposed to knee jerk reactions to the anecdotal information provided here in TW like the failure described in this thread. Keep in mind people aren’t pouring into the 4th gen section to post up about how they’ve had no failures. The chatter is always gonna be from the people who have a problem to report.
