I've had my scoop open for years and you can absolutely see a difference in intake temps due to heat evacuating through it. I often see heat waves coming out of scoop after I park on warm days. Having an open grill doesn't do much until as Torspd mentioned you give the air somewhere to go.

Hmm, my stock intake and non scooped hood pulls ambient temp air at 35ish mph. Verified thru a scangauge, ultragauge, and torque app.

I think that raising the rear of the hood will make a difference at low speeds, but on the highway the area at the base of the windshield becomes a high pressure area that will force air into the engine bay. Nascar stockers run a duct from the intake inlet to the base of the windshield to get the benefit of this ram air effect. So on a street truck this may disrupt the stock underhood airflow at highway speeds. Maybe it will help ... maybe not.

Actually it is low pressure at the cowl, hence the cowl induction back in the late 60's.

A functional hood like mine definitely makes a big difference if you're running a supercharger, the supercharger creates 10° of heat for every one pound of boost so I'm putting 10 pounds of boost down which adds temperature 100° More, so I'm happy to have a functioning hood scoop and methonal to get rid of those added temps
The scoop lines up directly infront of the supercharger

    Post charge gauge?

Also isnt that figure dependant on the efficiency of the blower?

I have a boost guage that shows actual 10 pounds of boost but remember I am 6000 feet.
Also had a dyno chat done for it with the larger pulley at 9.25 pounds. The 2" pulley pushes 10 pounds
at 6000 feet. If I was at sea level numbers would be different.

That figure is all depending on what size pulley you put on

I take it you don't have a supercharger and are not aware of the added heat it makes.
Did not use any technical stuff, don't need to, but if you have a supercharger you are well aware of all the added heat trapped under the hood because there is no intercooler for these 3.4 motors and if you have any experience in running 10 pounds of boost that adds 100 more degrees any added air coming in ontop
of the supercharger from a scoop is a win win deal. I can run the supercharger super hard and can put my hand on the supercharger without it burning my hand, it's a combo of meth and the scoop, before I could not do this

Id just like to see objective info before i went out and bought a scooped hood.
Ive pondered this for a few yrs, and assumed it would atleast help with low speed heatsoak.

I can't comment on the 2nd gens but the for the 3rd gens a toyota engineer commented that if the scoop was functional, it would reduce cooling capabilities since it would be disrupting air flow from the grill. It's scoop, not a vent. I think you would need something like a Mitsubishi Evo's hood vent to extract air while moving rather than a scoop. Maybe it works better since the grill is smaller on the 2nd gens, but would probably be worse for 3rd gens.

    Yes
I can see heat waves coming out of the scoop when I stop a red lights = heat escaping instead of stewing under the hood. If it is in fact a negative pressure zone which seems to be the conventional thinking that means air is being extracted through the scoop not being forced through it. I might mount my gopro under the hood one day and tie some ribbon under there to settle this debate once and for all :)

p.s. - I don't believe an f-n thing any Toyota engineer says... it is all marketing and meeting EPA and safety regs...

    Too few to list.
I believe the oem scoop can only function as a vent for cooling the engine bay down but not as ram air as it is in a low pressure location. On 2nd gens, I think air hits the grill and skips to about the middle of the windshield.

It makes sense that heat escapes while stopped but at speed it makes more sense to have a hood vent rather than scoop when running a stock hood. The only way I can see a scoop help is if you're running a top mounted intercooler with a tall scoop like an sti.

For me I don’t need air to enter at speed. At speed I keep temps down just fine. It’s when the truck is creeping along at <10 mph in 100 degree weather in Moab with the AC on high. At that point anything to get heat out is good

I still have the stock scoop but I have modified it slightly.

I haven't noticed any differences in intake temps but I have heard my truck looks like it's on fire at night. Maybe it runs a little hot?

Also, I am not worried about intake temps, with a snorkel I pretty much am always at ambient temp with the intake per my ultra gauge. Just want a way to keep the engine cooler
