I'm not going to lie, I make good money. The problem is it's a 20% cut. I could easily deal with the 2 year pay freeze (which is really a pay cut after inflation) or even a minor cut of 1-5%. But that's a huge amount to absorb this quickly.

We thought we were going to be able to avoid it since we're a Navy Working Capital fund (most of our funding comes from programs outside of Congress).

We can carry over 240 hours. Anything above that at the end of the fiscal year is use it or lose it.

We also can't use vacation time.

I agree with this definitely. My wife is a fed too, so we are affected by this double. And for all those that say gov employees are overpaid and under worked, you obviously dont see the whole picture. I work my ass off day in and day out. In my specialized field, if i were to quit and go private sector i could make double my salary, which at a gs13 salary is not a bad salary. But i like my job, i like the (somewhat) job security, and most importantly i believe in the mission. I hope everyone can make it through this with relatively little damage.

What bothers me more than anything is how the media is portraying it as not that big of a deal because the cut is small relative to the deficit. It's true it's small but it's also targeted and isn't spread out to all equally (8% cut for military spending).

Working for the state of California, I have been furloughed in one way or another at least one day a month for the last 4 years. At one point it was 3 days a month.

Also remember that Federal employees have been on a pay freeze since 09, we can't use vacation or sick days instead of furlough days and we are still expected to do the same overall amount of work with 20% resources...and our travel budgets have been slashed 90% so we can't do our required facility inspections.

As for leave, I have 720 annual in the bank and 1950 sick and another 150 travel comp...and three years until my 30 and retirement.

I know we have a cap on hours, not sure what it is off the top of my head, but, dont they have to pay you for the vacation time you make over the top out? Atleast my company does that im not sure if its CA law.

And it took a literal act of congress to be able to save that much annual leave...all I can hope is that the GOP doesn't try to steal it back so they can give tax breaks to their corporate sponsors.

We have a theoretical cap on total hours, but they don't have to pay us out for them. What usually happens is we get forced to take a month off to burn the time down which puts a huge strain on the rest of the staff and builds up their leave balances. We also don't get paid overtime, it gets put into a bank to be used as time off later. I don't have my balance statement in front of me, but I have right around or a little over 300 hours each of sick, vacation, and CTO (overtime converted to time off).

With the passing of Prop 30 I think we might actually do a little better this year.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
Instead of complaining on this site, we all should be complaining to the group of people that put us in this mess and refused to try to find a solution.
I hope we all remember next election cycle, who refused to bargain, the same group that has refused to bargain for four years, and maybe send a message about putting our needs as a country first, and not the political needs of a political party!
Hope that wasn't too political for this forum, I didn't name names.

    .
As a few of the posters stated, it is going to be difficult here to keep this thread from becoming a political discussion. The desire to point fingers and lay blame is certainly there and we don't blame you guys one bit, it's personal and very emotional, but do try to keep it on topic.
