I'd get the 4cyl if it were more powerful with a 5 speed trans if it really put up good mpg numbers.

You may add more HP to a 4cyl, but that doesn't necessarily mean more torque .. which is what really matters with these trucks. Plus no matter what, pairing a 4cyl iwth an automatic is going to be slooooooow. A reg cab or a 4x2 might be fine, but with a 4x4 access cab, I recommend the V6 if you want to go with automatic. As for the V6 260Hp with 6-speed auto .. i don't see that getting worse gas mileage (as you have it in the poll). I see it getting better by 1-2mpg.

And as TacoNoire said, I too would have gone with the 4cyl if it actually got great MPG. But they don't! In the flats, they can best the V6 by 20%. But the V6 has 48% more power. In the mountains, the 4cyl can require serious downshifting to keep up, which just guzzles gas as the RPMs race. I've talked to guys who get the same MPG in the mountains with the I4 that I get with the V6.

I'd sure love to replace our Subie with a VW Golf TDI 4-Motion. But friggen VW won't sell them in the states. The 2WD yes. The AWD no. Grr. But I've also heard VWs have bunches of problems. That bums me out. Because so does Subaru. Is it too much to ask for a reliable, fuel efficient AWD compact?!

    I didn't vote. I would rather a V6 with some sort of Ecoboost-like technology and a 5-6mpg gain.

The v8 would be great for towing power in the tacoma for those that need it. A small v8 could be great option in the tacoma for those that don't want a whopper TONDRA.

A reliable Toyota source has told TacomaHQ.com that Toyota will begin offering a direct injection engine in the Tacoma in 2013, as a 2014 model.

Specs on the engine are still unknown – one expects that this will be a V6, another that it will be a 4 cylinder – but we expect that specifics will start to trickle out soon. Based on the reliability of these sources in the past, it’s entirely possible that both the 4cylinder and the 6cylinder will be new in 2014

If the new engine is indeed a 4cylinder, it is expected that the standard automatic transmission for this engine will be a new 5speed.

As far as a full redesign of the Tacoma, that is still many years away. When the new engine(s) arrive in 2013, they will not be accompanied by a redesign.

And what would the direct injection do?

I didn't vote in the pole. If I can't have a choice of a manual transmission, I don't want a new Tacoma, even with new engines. I'll keep my 08.

The only talk of the 2013 Tacoma has been just that... talk. There was a concept Tacoma made and displayed at the SEMA show. But that's all that has been done. Back in 2007 the almost identical truck was made as well. Working at Toyota I hear a lot from going to all kinds of different training classes and seminars. I have promised to post any new information on any type of new additions to the Tacoma's soon as I hear about them.
Here is a little info on the 2012 Concept

... And don't get your hopes too high on the Hilux coming here anytime soon either.

    coming soon!
I was hoping they would drop in the 4.7 V8 from the Tundra before I bought my 2011 Tacoma but it didn't happen and I don't think we'll ever see a V8 in the Tacoma but if they ever do it I'll be the first to buy. The Tacoma would scream with a V8!
