Diesel is a joke except in commercial applications where the power, and longevity is needed. The $5000 and up premium for a diesel option, plus the price of diesel fuel over regular gasoline, negates the potential gains for the average driver. You just can't recover the extra cost of the diesel and it's fuel.

I like diesel, the low end torque, the sound, and the feel. I drove a commercial truck for 20 years. I had a Dodge with the Cummins back in the 90's. I'd never buy another diesel unless something drastically changes. No way most people will ever get that premium back in fuel mileage, or service life.

Gasoline direct injection doesn't offer that much benefit, unless it's the stratified charge type with turbo charging. Most likely it won't be in this country, due to the cost, and complexity of emissions equipment.

A V8 Tacoma would be ridiculous, as is the Chevy Colorado with the 5.3 V8. I'd never buy anything like that if I were a mega millionaire. If I wanted that I'd buy a sports car.

My 2.7 four cylinder suits me just fine. No, I'm not sorry I didn't get the V6, nor am I sorry I didn't the automatic transmission...

I don't see how a 5spd auto is going to go +2-3 mpg compared to the current combo.
Our gearing and overdrive are already pretty tall. The 5th gear would end up being one of two things:

    Alternative 2nd for performance driving
Realignment of the ratios making for a more close ratio trans.

Would be nice if Toyota could come up with a v6 comparable to fords Eco boost. Maybe the dual vvti in the new 4 runners do? Not sure, but a v6 that could stand up to that would be nice...

Same engine. 24-26 mpg. That's all this truck needs. For the ones that want more power then add a SC.

Just wait for the 2014s and you may see a direct injection 4 cyl. turbo but I do not think you will see a turbo on a V6.You will most likely see a new direct injection V6 in the Tacoma and 4 Runner that is not the current dual vvti in the new 4 Runner.

Not related to this thread at ALL, but i just saw the commercial for the nissan frontier, "snowboarding" down a mountain, and doing a barrel roll... wtf happened to REAL commercials, like dropping it 30 feet on to concrete and the frame not busting in half ... oh wait, that was chevy.... nvm, :anonymous:

It took Top Gear a 200ft drop to break the frame on a HiLux ;)

Although the main focus of businesses like Toyota should be continual improvement, I'm happy with the current V6. It has enough power for my driving habits and it is reliable. Maybe put the upgraded Dual VVT-i 1-GR into the Taco, but that's enough.

If I wanted one soon I would not want to buy the first year out with new engines. You might consider a 2012 and then trading for a 2015 or 2016 in a few years.Toyota has had little problems with new engines but it can happen.

Wouldn't sell here unless they come up with a 3/4 or 1 ton heavy duty to put the diesel engine in. Very little sales potential for light duty diesel in the U.S., and that's be proven too many times already. Sad, but that's how it is.

it makes the most financial sense for Toyota to offer the dual vvt-i 4.0L V6 in the next gen Tacoma whenever that may be. They already build it for the 4runner and FJ. It would make no sense to design some new and radical engine for a vehicle that sells well and owns the compact/mid truck segment
