There will be a change in engines, this has been confirmed by reliable sources. There will be a direct injection engine.

I've been critical of many aspects of the 2nd gen Tacomas, but the 4.0 is a real gem in my book. It has plenty of power for anything you would do with a midsize truck, and has very good power characteristics. It's one thing that I wouldn't change at all.

    same shit as everyone else
I think Toyota is going to come out with a 30-32MPG 5 lug 4 bangger and a 25-26 MPG highway 6 lug 4x4 V6. They will both be direct injected with a heat recovery system to help the alternator power shit during idle. Also watch for some weight reduction. Not much more they can do other then that but it'll help. Although ya'll still put on winches, sliders, bigger tires and all kinds of other shit and still ask "why does my gas millage suck"

Most of the MPG improvements over the last 40 years have come from reducing vehicle weight, not improving engine efficiency. Load these trucks down to the same weight, and you end up pretty close. What they have done though is get more power from smaller engines, again reducing weight. The next round will most likely result in a great deal of complexity, even greater compromise to the trucks utility as a truck, and at best 2MPG. Not a trade off I would make.

A gallon of fuel only contains so many BTUs of energy. It is not, as some believe, a bottomless pit of potential.

Let a war happen between Israel and Iran and watch gas jack up to $6/gal, you will be WISHING you could save 2 MPG. 2 MPG adds up! You can only do the speed limit anyways so a 4cyl will not only save you on the initial cost, insurance, maintenance, 2 mpg, etc, but it will save you on speeding tickets as well. IMO, I see a 4cyl as a cost effective solution for a smart person who knows how to manage money. Maybe you are lacking in money smarts sir? Mechanical book brains and no common sense, perhaps?

    Just a useless update:

I have been at Central Atlantic Toyota all day for classes on the Prius C & Plug-in. I happened to squeeze a few questions in on any new plans on the Tacoma. I was told that there isn't any new plans for the Tacoma... BUT there has been talk a few times over the past few months about the Hilux.

Don't get your hopes up just yet! But I did promise that I would mention it in this thread when I find anything out.

No money, all went to truck...
why not just use the 4runner dual vvti engine?

290 hp and 20mpg. I'd be fine with that.

If they bring the D4D, i can't care less if they branded it as a Tacoma or a Hilux...

    Worthless.

I am more than happy with my V6 and my gas mileage. I dont get speeding tickets, Why? Because I dont speed. I also drive a IS350 and I dont get speeding tickets. Stop blaming other shit for your actions. Is it the cars fault if someone gets a speeding ticket? No.
Yeah saving gas is nice and all but I want a truck with some gut it. That doesn,t make me or anyone eles stupid or less money smart. Go hug a fucking tree and pinch a penny or shove it up your crack. Or maybe just get a better job.

The search function is overloaded from overuse.:D

I might be temped to trade in my V6 D/C if they offered a 4 cyl D/C 4x4 with a standard tranny. The current 2.7, or a new offering, but if it was new I'd wait a couple years for it to be proven. Otherwise, I'm keeping my current truck 'till death do us part.

While I agree completely with this statement, the internal combustion engine is a horribly inefficient machine. Worse than a unionized goverment worker on a monday morning. The efficiency is in the 30 - 40% range, I'm not aware the 40% mark has been touched yet. So, in theory, there is room for improvement, as approx 2/3 of the energy is wasted. But, emissions requirements overrule fuel economy, so we run rich mixtures to light off our CATs, run EGR systems on deisels with milage losses, burn perfectly good fuel to regen DPF systems on deisels... you get my point. So, yes, there is a limit ti the amount of energy in a gallon of fuel. But using more than 1/3 of it would be nice. I'm dreaming, right?
