Personally, I don't see any reason for Toyota to mess with a good thing. 2.7 gets decent mileage if you don't need the power. 4.0 does about anything you need a small pickup to do. And, if that's not enough, drop $5k on a sc and you'll have more hp (304) and tq (334) than the 4.7 V8. Next subject?

I don't get why people bag on the 2.7. It has more power than my dad's 73 chevy v8 did. Engines have come a long way and are more powerful and efficient than they are given credit for. The 2.7 isn't that much weaker than my 3.4 last I checked.

    Mehh... Which engine?
    My '67 Chevelle 283 2 barrel was 195, that's a fair amount higher than the 2.7.
Granted, the 400, 262, and 307 were pretty anemic, but that's not because the 2.7 is particularly powerful, it's because those engines were severely de-tuned to meet EPA standards.
We didn't really need a national 55 limit because many vehicles sold after 1974 struggled to get to 60.

But I'll be the last to bag on the 2.7.
I think it's a great engine and you will not likely be left "wanting more" unless you're towing.... and there's a fine line between a decent tow with a Tacoma and when you end up wishing you had a Tundra 5.7 or an oil burner.
That was the whole reason I traded my '03 Tundra on an '06 Duramax. We were planning on buying a toy hauler. The lightest decent quality trailers were in the 16ft class from Weekend Warrior. Still a little small, and 500lbs too heavy for the Tundra.
The lighter toy haulers from Carson and similar companies don't hold up to fire roads.

Besides... Bagging on Toyota engines is what people do.
I was orgasmic over the 4.7 in my '03 Tundra after 10 years with my 22RE and 6 years with a Ford Escort.

But people on Tundrasolutions were crying that it lacked power. Jeez guys... it's a 4.7... 285-class, and it put out 245hp. That's about 20-40hp more than a TBI 5.7 GM from the early-mid 90s.

He had a 307. My point is that I want people to look at how far engines have come and how they have been improved over time.

Ya, but the Chevy V8 is a horrible example of that because before it improved to modern levels (roughly 1 to 1.2 hp per cubic inch), it was detuned to .3 hp/CID from it's previous .8 or better.

A better comparison is to previous 4 bangers like the 22RE, 22R, 20R, 18R, etc....

I didn't think it was all that bad of a comparison. True it is different companies and different amounts of cylinders but the fact that a 4 cylinder has more power than a V-8 has to say something.

I still would like a factory offered turbo charged 4 banger and/or a diesel engine for the Tacoma. Maybe with that new Colorado coming over with a diesel will kick Toyota into producing something of the sort.

It's a bad comparison because the old 22R had more power than that 307 :D

But I see your point and totally agree with you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 2.7, and I was not totally happy when I saw that the 4-Runner options had moved from 2.7/4.0 to 4.0/4.7.
I hope they don't drop the 2.7 from the Taco.

I was upset when Ford killed the Ranger and Chrysler did away with the Dakota. I liked them both, though they weren't the greatest they were competition for Toyota for the Tacoma. I am sourly dissapointed in Nissan for not having a regular cab on either of their trucks. I am no GM fan but I hope this new Colorado comes with the diesel and it better be good enough to help bring back competition and small pick up trucks.

I still would like to see a turbo diesel option.

    So would I.

Never in California, and unlikely in the US market.

    Indeed it would.

But now try to persuade those who believe that "Diesel" is a 4-letter word.

I agree with your line of thought, but good chance the engines will already be in use in another toyota model, US or otherwise.

well what did you get? Why not get an older 1st gen 2wd taco, use it for a couple years then get the updated Taco if it lives up to your expectations?
