I like to peruse the classifieds section here and on other sites because I like buying shit. I like little doo dads that make my truck a little different or a little more convenient to operate, or user friendly, but sometimes I see stuff people are buying and the subsequent cost of said item and I think to myself “WTF?”.

For instance, today I saw a mod for turning the start button red? Nice mod, very cool and I immediately thought “I want this”, but then a I saw the price. IMHO, $140 bucks just to turn a button red seems ridiculous to me. And before anyone says it. Yes I get it’s the whole housing that has to be replaced. I have no ill will towards the seller or the price of the gadget in that I get why it costs what it costs. All I’m saying is the net effect when you’re done is that you end up with a red button as opposed to a black one. That’s the whole point, you’re paying that much to change the color of an obscure little button most people will never even see.

I’m not picking on this seller in particular. It’s just an example. There is so much shit out there that costs so much for such seemingly little effect and yet people are willing to pay though the nose. Hell I’m guilty of it myself. I’ve paid what some would call ridiculous prices for fly rods, knives, and guns. But at least I can kind of justify that by the sheer man hours involved in the making and purpose those things will serve.

I guess I’m just confused. On the one hand I sometimes get why, and other times I'm left dumbfounded because there is such seemingly little return for the cost.

    What say you?

I really wanted that red button, too. Until I saw the price.
But then again, I pay $500 to hunt in Illinois every year.

It was $120 when I started hunting over there. But whatever, it's worth it to me.

I say spend money on whatever makes you happy. If someone wants a red button by golly get the darn thing. I’ve spent a stupid amount on this truck I know it’s a depreciating asset but I’ve made life long memories and friends because of it..that alone is worth it.

I agree 100%. I wouldn’t care if somebody wanted to spend $100,000 on a strand of dental floss. It’s their money, but that’s not the point. I just wonder at how people gauge cost vs. what they’re getting for said cost.

Another one I could never quite wrap my head around is watches. I like watches, but five figures for one seems a little excessive to me. I know everything is relative but I think even if I had Bill Gates money, there are just certain things that seem insanely over priced for what you get. That’s what I’m talking about.

Ahh I see your perspective a little more clearly now...An I have no clue on that some people are brand loyal at any cost, want to impress others, some are clueless I can relate to all 3 aspects of that at one point or another in my short life.
Maybe the individuals setting the price should be in question as well..consumerism is a weird thing all in itself imho.

yep, and I honestly don’t even have any ill will towards the people setting price. If people are willing to pay it you can’t blame the seller.
