Yup, test it by shorting across the contacts with a paper clip.

So it appears I bought the wrong size switch for where I wanted to put it....

Anyone know the right size/where to get one?20180210_111808.jpg

THANK YOU! This is awesome. I appreciate the idea. I opted for the harder way, because I didn’t want the open slot and I didn’t have a sun roof.

    It wasn’t that difficult.

    Edit: just finished. :)

Two questions: The link to the garage door switch isn't working. Can someone repost? (I searched but can't find one site the OP provided.

    2. Has anyone see a double rocker switch with garage door printed on it? Thinking this could be a good option for those who want to have the ability to open more than one door. Thinking something like this but with Garge Door "1" and "2" printed on it.

Go to Air On Board and you will see Toyota switches there. There are two sizes, yours and one that is more rectangular instead of squareish.

Why not just buy the homelink mirror off ebay? You can get the plain unlit mirrors for $100 or so. I got the blue compass with blue buttons for $220. It plugged directly and required nothing more than a torx bit to remove the mirror.

I'm a mechanical / electrical incompetent, so the idea of installing a switch seems way out of my league. But I do admire those who have such skills. While it's not as elegant as a switch, I simply Velcro'ed my garage door opener in the space behind the AT shift lever and under the emergency brake lever. The opener is securely in place and the brake lever and garage door opener don't interfere with one another. Now that's more in my league.

Also, if I need to, as in right now when I've exchanged vehicles with my kid so she could take my truck on a family ski trip, I can transfer the garage door opener to her car.

Kudos to the OP for the slick OE looking solution

Here is another solution. Not as elegant, but even easier.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cheap-free-mods.4838/page-88#post-9881339

If you don't have a blank switch to use, you can place the button anywhere, like on the bottom of the steering column clamshell, on your console, etc. Whatever is easiest to reach.

In the name of full disclosure, I will be changing my button to a nice switch like the OP, where the button is now.

For those who think the clip on the visor solution is the cats meow, good for you.

But I'll wager you never had a remote snagged our of a convertible, or even your truck with the window down. Even know some bikers that use a similar solution, as most bikes don't have visors.

Posted a while ago in "what have you done today", but here is how I added an opener without the cost of homelink using the overhead panel. Just a different option.

    Finished image first:

Step 1: Lower the overhead panel (was able to do it without tools) and remove the center blank. (Note that the passenger side area is much more difficult to use than it would appear).

Step 2: Drill a hole the size of your push button switch in the correct location of the center removable panel (easy to see where when you are looking at the assembly). Could easily fit two buttons if you have two doors.

Step 3: Wire up a garage door opener that you have already programmed to a momentary push button switch. Check the circuit board for which legs to use, almost certainly will be diagonal from each other. I went an extra step and added a simple two wire barrel connection for easy install and removal if ever needed.

Step 4: I notched the plastic housing of the remote for the wire to get out and reassembled (left battery door off). I added strong Velcro to the back.

Step 5: Stick the remote up into the opening out of the way. Connect the wires, reinsert the center panel, and push the overhead unit back into place.

where. Holy crap that is awesome. I'd do the mod just to have this (or something as funny) switch to match my license plate (YARM8E)

I can't seem to find any Toyota Garage momentary switches anywhere right now on the MICTuning or AOB sites.....

One overlooked fact that may have been mentioned is when your remote is no longer working, you will have to access that remote control board thats tucked away and replace the battery, it’s not often, but it’s not using the cars battery to maintain its constant power...so don’t make it too locked up and sealed.

My thought was to put it in the engine bay, and run the wires when I do the power for my amp next week-ish. I want it to be accessable for that very reason.

Now that’s a great idea sir! Just make sure it has somewhat of a clear line of site, not too tucked behind other stuff in the engine bay as that can also hinder signal.
