Google “celestial navigation” for more details. For a twenty, I’m in.

I demand someone get this and then whip it out mid wheeling trip when someone asks where they are on the map

Needs to be put on Instagram. I have the plastic sextant that was in the aircrew ditch kits but it’s really old and the plastic is getting brittle. Was going to show my son how it worked using a false horizon but I reckon it will break.

    I would do that!!

Cheap enough I can get one for every vehicle

Scary people have no clue what it is or how to use it.

I would trust that over any magic box

Why is it scary I don’t know what it is or how to use it? I’ve never seen one, never been on a boat that would have one. My family never has been big into water anything, we’d rather go to the mountains than a place where a boat would be. Different strokes for different folks.

They were also used on planes. I think the USAF finally dropped the sextant requirement for navs sometime in the 90s if I remember right.

I have one developed for the Shuttle. Don’t know if it ever flew. Lightweight, plastic.

I’ll post up a pic later.

Well the planes I've been on they wouldn't let me fly them so there again, I don't know what it is

I feel old when people don't know how to use a Thomas Guide, let alone a sextant.

We had to teach the new joes how to read a civilian road map before even being able to move on to basic navigation.

I have used one of these, on a ship that had the keel laid in 1942, and actually had voice tubes that we used to convey engine orders to the engine room. That's right, I'm so old ships had sails...lmmfao.
    Zim

Edit. Don't try to use it in 12 foot seas, in the fog.

Anytime we went somewhere out of town growing up it was a folding map or an atlas for us while pulling a Jayco pop-up camper. Dad was an engineer for the F.D. a city over (major city) from our small town farm life, he was constantly studying road maps on his days off all over the city so they would know where to go. This was way before GPS.

Even still, the road knowledge from FD engineers is unreal. Some I talk to even have preferred hydrants on certain streets
