WTF...both my trucks have this issue...pisses me off.
The 2005 has a broken hinge due to rust....
And the 2007 feels like it is about to break too!
(I took a pic, but daughter must have erased it from my phone...)

    Anyone else?

Yes, my lower hinge already rusted through and is hanging by the top hinge.

This underscores the importance of keeping gasoline drips from getting on the truck when filling up. I always use a rag or the filler cap to catch drips and if you do get some, they should be wiped up right away.

Mine is creaky even though I've never spilled a drop of gas on it. Something else is going on here...

CaptCLuless: Sorry, dunno. Probably an easy weld, but I don't have the skills or tools.

CtTaco, you are right. It ain't gasoline. It is something fishy. Probably water not draining from the hinges after a wash or something. I was going to use some white lithium on my creaky one, haven't got around to it yet. Not sure if it is a good idea. i am just *super* careful with the broken one....shitty.

yeah I agree. It wasn't long after buying the tacoma I notice the gas door was kinda crooked. Then I noticed it rubbing the inside paint off. I asked the stealership about it before my 3/36 was done but they blew it off but at least had it noted in the service history.

Its a poor design imo. The hinge & pin is super thin metal & small. Plus the door is riveted on so no adjustment. Road Salt just loves getting in there, dirt etc. I'm careful when filling, no gas ever touch the hinge. Many have reported the bottom hinge breaking & its not covered.

I just put some penetrating oil on it today. It works much better but still am very careful opening crossing my fingers it doesn't snap the bottom hinge.

No hinge issues but the closing clips are useless on my truck, it doesn't "grab" the closing pin, so the door opens really easily. I can squeeze them together but they open back up within a couple tanks of gas.

    Everyone's like this?

Nope, never had any issues with my 2005 or 2011 Tacoma's gas doors. they close tight.

There has to be a way to replace the part that broke from being rusty? Think the dealer can fix this?

There is probaby an owner that has thought up a mod but the dealer will-
    1. order new door
    2. paint to match
    3. install
    4. take your money.
There are a few here & at tn who have had it happen. I think 05Moose has replaced his on own $$ here :notsure:
The dealer did nothing for me under warranty & didn't see a problem with the mis-alignment. Truck now has 60k. The platinum extended warranty claims to cover a fuel system opening hinge.
    From brochure:
    FUEL SYSTEM
    Air Flow Meter; Carburetor; Diesel
    Fuel Injection Pump; Electric Fuel
    Pump; Electronic Fuel Injection
    System; Fuel Injectors; Fuel Pressure
    Regulator; Fuel Pump; Fuel Sending
Unit; Fuel Sensors; Fuel Tank; Throttle
    Body; Charcoal Canister; Fuel
    Filler Opening Lid Hinge Spring
    <--------
But that is the black clip thing, not the hinge according to my dealer.

Owners in other less inclement weather regions probably do not have an issue......

You are supposed to grease the fuel filler door hinge the same time you do your door hinges and hood latch. It's "oil, lube and filter" after all.
