Okay, so I guess my first mistake was letting the wife take the Taco to the dealership to find out why the check engine light is on. I am a 6 hour drive away and thought a diagnostic would tell me which O2 sensor to change and I would be good when I got back. Turns out, they told her the gas tank needed changing along with one of the hoses. WTH? That will be almost $1200. Is a 2005 Taco with 98,000 miles on it have a faulty gas tank? Unless they stabbed the tank, really???? A new tank? Do they have to separate the bed from the truck, turn the bed around, laser align the bed with a custom gas tank. I'm confused. Wow....

Where's the paperwork they gave her? Can you scan it and upload it here? I'm certain she's getting mixed up on what they said. Maybe she's getting EVAP canister confused with gas tank.

I doubt an EVAP canister would be $1,200.00

True. Nothing from a dealer's service center would surprise me now.

Take it somewhere else. The only thing I use dealers for are recalls.

I wouldn't give the dealer a dime until I'm sure what exactly is the problem

I guess I will drop the tank and take a look now. The canister was the worst case scenario that I thought of. No pictures were taken but I kept repeating myself to her making sure they said gas tank. She said something about the technician having a problem separating a hose from the tank but damn. I wonder if they didn't screw something up and just said, "Hey, you got a problem here."

If it is a 2005 you should be able to find a reputable mechanic that is not at the dealer to tell you why that light was on. After seeing how the local dealer has tried to rip off my wife I would not trust anything they tell her.

I don't think you need a new gas tank. What I do think is there was a failure to communicate. Your wife should have gotten a work order that had the prognosis written down on it. If not call the dealer, they should be able to look it up and explain exactly what is needed.

You probably need a replacement Charcoal Evap Canister and they have an issue with one of the hoses going to the gasoline tank. They will probably need to remove the bed to get to this hose. When you add up a couple hundred for the canister, a hundred for the hose assembly, shop fees and three hours of labor at 150 and hour it is going to be close.

I would go elsewhere or do it myself.

Another day, another dealer clusterfuck.......Why not just cut the damn hose and use a metal splice and 2 clamps to reconnect it? If that is even what is going on.....

The wife just sent me the work order. Vent hose and gas tank replacement. So is that hose permanently attached? Doubt it. Don't remember the code but it was for evap.

Insane. Replace the whole tank because the vent hose has a leak. Unless the nipple the hose goes on broke off the tank there's no reason for that

Physically look at the vacuum hoses by the tank. From the fuel filler neck and the large accordian hose going to the charcoal canister. You might find a very simple issue. There is also a solenoid attached to the upper plenum of the intake manifold. Has a vacuum hose routed to it from just behind the throttle body. Check those hoses as well.
