I have one on my truck. It's well made, and does what it's supposed to. How much is your tailgate worth?

I use the 50¢ hose clamp that needs a special key to open it... Also I have the pop n lock power lock so my tailgate is locked whenever the truck is locked anyways.

+1 for the hose clamp. It's cheap and thieves look for quick and easy grabs so they would probably just move on

Why not just install a locking tailgate handle? Mine was even compatible with the backup camera.

    1. hose clamp on passenger side - I installed a 2nd clamp around 1st
    2. flat washers on inside of gate straps
    3. 6 ft. long 1/4 inch bicycle cable straps going thru each side of gate brackets and down below(small padlock). 3/8 won't go thru gate bracket.
Thief can cut 3/8" as easily as 1/4".

Thief has 6 things to remove before he can get gate.

There's a lengthy discussion on the tail gate theft issue in the Technical Chat section.

I also got the Pop N Lock handle to lock the tailgate. Got it from Camera Source and installed a backup camera at the same time. All for less than $300 shipped.

I actually just received that gatekeeper in the mail and will be installing soon.

I would like a locking tailgate but I don't like how cheap the pop n lock components feel.

Not familiar with the "Technical Chat" section or the flat washer mod to the tail gate cables.

Could you please post a link to the thread in the Technical Chat section? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah I wish they were a little more stout, but then again Toyota's stock tailgate handle doesn't feel very strong either.

Thanks Brother. I saw that thread back in July when I bought my new Taco and did the hose clamp. Think I'll also do the two washer install like Maxboi suggested along with some red loctite on the Torx screws on either side.

Crooks like fast and easy so maybe these mods will at least slow the scumbags down...

Which is exactly why I bought the Pop & Lock power lock, and kept the stock toyota handle.... One less key, and I am sure the factory Toyota handle will last a long time. Here is my write-up on that install.

I bought the self keying Pop n Lock. Uses my ignition key.
