OK, I have an 04 taco 3.4 auto. I really dont care for my factory off white gauges. I want the black faced gauges found in 98-00. I have read that a few people have switched the other way around "upgrading". I wanna "downgrade" if you will. I also have a few other questions about these clusters:
#1 When the cluster is illuminated, does the light go "around the dial" or "through the dial" like the 04?
#2 What color is the backlighting? Can it be changed?
#3 Could just the gauge faces be changed? Any aftermarket companies offer black faced factory like guage faces?
#4 If the complete cluster is changed will my miles show correct? In other words, are the miles kept up with in this cluster or the pcm? Is it a programmable module that needs to be programmed to my truck?

i was one of the 98-00 guys who "upgraded" to the white gauges from an 01-04. i switched gauges/faces with a member on here.

#1: not sure what you're asking here. the lights are mounted in the white plastic backing that holds all four gauges together.
#2: basic 194 bulbs with the green condom
#3: sort of. while you could change just the faces, it's easier to change the entire gauge (don't have to worry about recalibrating the needles, etc. either)
#4: as seen in the pic, just keep your odometer display and you keep the correct miles with the correct truck.

also, i did notice that there was some *slight* differences in the gauges:

    - the white gauges have the check engine light on the fuel gauge instead of below the four gauges in the narrow strip of icons along the bottom of the cluster.
    - the white gauges have a "fuel door" icon above the fuel gauge. if you have a 2001-2004 i think you'll just lose that indicator.

Thanks for the info, I actually got by my local salvage yard today. He sold me the cluster I needed for 30 bucks. Actually I have not paid him yet... He said to make sure it would work first. So maybe I will get a chance to install it tomorrow.
    Thanks!!!!:D

For anyone else trying to do this, the two clusters are interchangable.:D As a matter of fact, the gauges are not so much. The check engine light and washer fluid light are in different locations. All I did was swap the odometer module from the back, and plug and play!!! Works Great!!!
