Gauge lighting - ticket for it being off at night?

Got me an Ultragauge not too long ago. I REALLY like it more than my OE gauges (have it resting on the steering column cover), so with that said, I was driving with my pops one night and he kind of snapped at me for having my gauge lighting off at night. I told him that I have a better gauge on and he told me it doesn't matter, YOU HAVE TO HAVE it on or you will get a ticket ... is this true? I don't see the point in having it on when all of what I want to monitor is right in front of me and I don't like the idea of having to look at one gauge, then another, and another/etc.

 

Not in California as far as I know. How would the cop in a lower vehicle, see on your dash inside your truck?

Worst comes to worst, if they are low, just turn them up in front of the cop. Please sign my 12.00 fix it ticket now, officer.

 

On long night drives, I set the cruise and turn my dash lights off all the time. Never gave a thought about it being illegal.

 

Mee too,, lots of So-Cal trips,,and I do most of the driving over nights,,

I always kill the dash lights .. just more comfortable on the old eyes that way,,,never heard of a CVC section regarding that tho

SMH .... guess it's just my pops being himself. In all honesty, I never understood why a dimmer WOULD have the off position on it anyhow. guess it's for daytime trips, idk. All I know is that I like the UG where it is and what it's telling me is fine for me, since all I want to monitor is right there, no need to have my eyes wondering more than they should be ... hell that would most likely play into my stereo type

 

Dash lights not required in IL. Pops is probably just being a safety nut. Thats what dads do.
