That looks awesome, really like the dovetail with the shorty tailgate. I keep my eyes out for 79-85 rigs all the time, I have the space for one but my 4 banger Taco would have its work cut out for it if I were to tow it home.

Thanks bud, I love it! This one popped up about 2 hours from and was in pretty good shape so I drove it home. No matter where the build goes I want to keep it streetable. Reactions from people in town are priceless and I just enjoy driving it

But I did ditch my tacoma in favor of something that had the ability to tow it to the trail.

Well Mater's torn apart while I chase a noise I suspect is coming from the rear. My worst fear was a chipped tooth on the ring gear so I started with the third to rule that out and thankfully the gears look to be in good shape; still a lot of metal in the gear oil though. Backlash still seems good, pattern looks good, no play in the pinion bearing, pinion bearing preload feels nice. I think I've ruled the diff out.

Now the noise is hard to explain. It's not a constant whine, it's more like a slight grind that changes with wheel speed so it's definitely a rotating part. I didn't check the wheel bearings before pulling the axles but will check them when I get the axle back together. I thought it might be a u joint since I got on my driveshaft at The Flats but the last time I had a u joint going out I got vibes and a constant hum plus the frequency of the noise is too slow to be something spinning with the shaft.

It's the driver's side wheel bearing. The cage is in pieces and it's missing about half the ball bearings. Going to check the passenger side tomorrow.

Rear bearing? If so make sure you get the seals too. They are quite fun to change. Getting the retainer clip and retainer of can be a bitch. Most of the time you have to cut the old retainer off. Also if the one is bad, I guarantee the other is going. Could just look for an ifs rear as well. Shouldn't be hard to find at a junkyard or nc4x4.

Yeah both bearings are bad and that's the plan. I've talked to a few guys and have found one that he'll sell for $40 without the third so I'm waiting on him to pull it and hopefully I can go pick it up tonight and get her back on her wheels.

I've heard/seen a guy cut out the old bearing off the axle instead of trying to pull/push it off. Cut in a diagonal though so you don't fuck up the shaft.

    Or a new axle whatever.

Yeah you can cut them off or heat them up and beat them off just not worth my time honestly since the brakes are shot too. I'm picking up the shafts and backing plates and everything from Andy's 85 runner so all I'll have to do is bolt them in and boom, I will have non-wobbly wheel bearings and rear brakes!

Not a bad idea. I can't wait to graduate and finally get some time to work on my pile.

I really miss being in the woods. I'm still going to have a shop weld on the Barnes cover and a few other goodies but I am going to pick up the motor out of Andy's 85 and swap that head onto mine. I should probably confirm that lol.

Also trying to pick up a little graduation present for myself in the form of a Tacoma. Need a DD tug boat.

I saw a guy post a video of one that is the same color but his is diesel. All you could see was the rear quarter panel, tire and black soot but I was a little jealous.

Ugh one day. One day I'll have a badder mall crawler than Brian Mauck.
