this seems like a good thread to ask this question:

I have a 2003 2wd ext cab 5spd. I'm interested in getting a limited slip diff for it. could i use a differential from a trd truck? would it be the same gearing? would i have to mount with the leafs on top of the diff instead of the bottom like it is now?

    dagnabit.

that also means putting that ring and pinion assembly in my diff housing won't work either right?

    I just checked, and my current truck has the 3:91 gears. (98 x-cab v6 4x4 5speed)

I also have the complete drivetrain out of a 1999 standard cab 4cy Auto 4x4.

I want to swap the complete rear axle into my truck, since mine has 245,000 miles, and is worn out. The problem is that I don't have the "code" from the other truck since I sent the body to the scrapyard. Is there anyway to find out the rear gear ratio without taking the axle apart?

you could maybe look at the specs on your door jamb, open the driver. on the body of the cab that door covers when it's shut there should be a sheet that has various info listed. your gear ratio might be on that, not sure.

Count how many revolutions of the pinion it takes to make one revolution of the axle. It is that ratio that we all talk about. For example, on a truck equipped with 4.10 gears it takes a little over 4 revs of the pinion to make 1 rev of the tire.

I had it done professionally. It's about $600 for the gears ($300 each) and about $800 for the install. That's the cheapest I was able to find it for. I'm not much of a mechanic so I didn't want to tackle the job myself. Some places wanted to charge about $1700 or more.

Good luck finding front and rear 4.10 gears.

The only ones I could find was a rear 4.10 and it was $1000.00 for one ring and pinion

I have 33s and 4.56s, 4 cyl, manual and it is perfectly geared.

ya the truck came stock with 4.10 and i have 33's now. so im thinking about 4.56x12.5 or 4.88x12.5( i never go over 65 cuz of 9 in lift) and i either want 35's or 38's. but i've heard a rummor that those big tires really f up your front end( not the motor but setering componets and other things) but what do you guys think?

Selling my 96 Tacoma to fund the FJ80 build up.
If you would like to try the install your self their are 4 things to look at.

    1. Back lash - pinion play forward and reverse (adjusted by ring gear side to side adjustment)

    2. Pinion bearing preload (Measured in inch pounds) Tightening pinion nut to crush the crush sleve and apply the correct inch pound force necessary to rotate the pinion gear in the housing with no ring gear installed. This will load the bearings with the proper force to keep the pinion from moving in and out with forward / reverse gear direction.

    3. Pinion depth - relation of pinion gear to ring gear as measured from pinion gear face to outer case housing mounting surface. Adjusted with shims ~

    4. Gear tooth contact pattern ~ verification that 1 and 3 are correct.

Best to have a pro do the rear since it will see 100K miles or more
You can do the front since it may only see 500-1k miles

Pirate 4x and Randys ring and pinion have great info on installation.
I did my first install on a $1500 Grand Cherokee beater and worked my way up front there.

If you can pull your own diff ~ Eastcoast gear supply offers differential exchange service or they will build your diff for you. I'm sure their are some vendors out west offering similar service.
