I need some advice on gears for my taco. 2017 OR. Will be running 35’s. Truck will be long travel +4.5. What gears should I run? Thinking 4.88 but a few people have said 4.88’s with 33’s is still too tall?

Hoping to hear from people here that have already re-geared their 3rd gens.

    TIA

4.88 should come on these trucks in stock form, with the 30" tires they have from the factory.

I have 4.88's w/ my 34x10.5 KO2s (which are actually 32.5" tall when properly inflated) and the gearing is nice. With larger tires, I would want shorter gears for sure. Consider 5.xx gearing, as some folks on here have done.

The truck will be daily driven so my concern with going to 5.xx + gearing is how the truck will operate at highway speeds. Hope to hear from those that have already regeared to 5.xx.

    Tire calculator is useful

It will give some comparisons for RPM and gearing.

There are online gear calculators too if you want to be more precise. If you use one of those, be sure to use your correct OD ratio, either auto or manual.

I noticed a very small difference in RPMs between stock 3.91 and 4.88. Based on that, I would expect the difference between 4.88 and low 5.xx to be insignificant.

With 6 speeds, I think even at 5.29 highway rpm’s wouldn’t be any where crazy. Actually might keep you in 6th at a “happy” place, just around where the power is.

I’m on 285’s (33” Goodyear Kevlar MTR) and with 4.88’s I’m in love. Best mod I’ve done hands down. Loaded for camping on big hills at 50mph, it’ll kick down to 4th. Speed limits here in Hawaii aren’t high at all (Saddle road is 60 which is the highest in the state). If I do saddle it’ll stay in 5th gear on hills, and on the flats at 60mph, my rpm’s around 2100.
In comparison, 3.90’s on 33’s would kick me to 3rd gear high revving it, and bog out 4th...I hated that. I’m definitely happy with how it performs now.

If you’re DD’ing on 35’s, 5.29’s get my vote. Have it and not need it then need it and not have it. Our trucks are 6 speed double overdrive, rpm’s will not be radical and you’ll enjoy it.

I have 35s with 4.88s. The 4.88 gears were perfect with the 33s but since I moved up to 35s I think the 5.29s would be much better suited for the task. I don't know anyone running 5.29s yet except for Big Mike cause they are brand new but look through this thread as well as the previously posted 4.88 thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-5-29-mega-thread.557305/

After reading all the comments I'm definitely leaning towards the 5.29s. Still waiting on few things to complete my kit so hopefully between now and then someone that actually has 5.29s on a 3rd gen can comment about how the truck drives.
