    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
@BartMaster1234 call The Rear End Shop in Riverbank. Not sure what their prices are exactly for re-gear but I know they are good guys and they are reasonably priced for everything they do. I know a few people who have delt with them, and they have all been happy with them.

It's been years since I had anything done by them personally, but they still have a very solid rep.

If you don't mind traveling to fresno, my buddy will do it for 250 a diff for bench work. He will even sell you any gears and lockers you want too, he's got good prices.

FWIW 4.88s pretty much crawler gears. You would be better off putting in a fresh motor or a supercharger or a manual trans for the price of a regear.

I myself am thinking of also going to 4.88 gears on my 02 DC Pre Runner that has a 4cyl . Yes I've got a supercharger but I drive up/down the 4500ft Cajon Pass and it's a tough climb !!!

I've always wondered what my IAT's are as I'm 4th gear at near 3k rpm climbing the steep pass

OP, I also have a 2.7l auto Tacoma. I got lucky and found a guy on ttora forum selling an assembled 4.88 rear diff with limited slip for $400. I paid a little over a hundred to get it shipped to me and installed it myself. I got power back that I lost when I went with the bigger tires but it wasn’t a huge improvement. I certainly wouldn’t pay $1,000 for this modification.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
If it's gonna cost 3k just to regear it I'd rather throw a supercharger in it instead personally.

4:88's were the best mod I did. 2.7 automatic 285/75 r16 tires. near-stock performance IMO

Well ya it will get you back to stock, but op seems to be looking for better than stock. Its a 4cyl auto trans in a 5k pound vehicle. Either less weight or more ponies, gearing can only go so far...

I'm running a supercharger on my 2.7 and it's nice to have but still notice power loss on steep hills especially the 4500ft 6% grade cajon pass

On the mtn pass if going Northbound or up the grade especially during a Santa Ana wind event that creates a strong head wind . It feels like I'm dragging anchor and it's a slow climb up the pass at 50-55mph

Interested to hear the issues that you have heard of.... I have only seen a few pinion seal failures from diffs that they have built...
