I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma Xtra Cab SR5 TRD. I feel in love with the Leitner Designs Active Cargo System. Sadly the don’t make them for the 1st gen, and after contacting them, they don’t have plans to make a 1st gen version and don’t do custom work. Does any one know if it’s possible to fit one of the racks for a different gen Tacoma to the 1st gen?

Doubtful unless you modify it to fit...1st gen beds are more narrow than 2nd/3rd gen beds

I use a 2nd gen Tacoma bed rack on my truck and it works just fine. My first gen bed is actually about a 1/4” wider than my dads second gen. I just used some padding that’s made to go between a canopy and the top rails of a bed to space out that 1/4” of play, and some canopy C clamps to hold it down on the bed rails.

If the length of the 1st gen and 2nd gen short bed/long bed is the same it should be do able. From the looks of it the cross bars are removable. You could shorten the cross bar for the width?

Try it and let us know!

But for the price of that system you could find a custom fab shop in your area to make you one similar.

1st gen beds are wider than 2nd gens, so he would want to lengthen them, or just space out the mounts at the bed rail.

Bed width on an extra cab is the same as a double cab so you shouldn't have any issues. I would go with a bed rack that's meant for the longer bed of an extra cab rather than a shorter one for a double cab bed like mine.

OP it is after all your choice buy a new rack do to much modifying you no longer have any warranty with the vendor

I think for that amount of money you could get a custom one built just how you want.

Draw it up shop it to local fab shops some parts of the country we are so very busy just keep that in mind

    This.

For $1500, a local fabricator could build you whateverthehell you wanted.

*except* that it isn't designed to fit your truck.

    You know, minor issue...

I can't wrap my head around how a 1st gen bed is wider than a 2nd gen when the 2nd gen is a wider truck...maybe it has to do with the bed rails going in further on 2nd gens?

Not disagreeing with you just trying to make sense of it lol. If it works then it works

I think that's it. The INSIDE dimension is narrower, while the OUTSIDE dimension is wider because they have those fancy-pants storage compartments in the bedsides.

Just look at the width of the tops of the bedsides. Mine is maybe an inch, while the 2nd/turd gens are several inches wide with those plastic bedrail toppers.
