So I have seen a lot of new model Tacoma’s with off-road bed racks, but I haven’t found the same ones on the gen 1 trucks. Any gen 1 people built one? I’m wanting to build my own and need some ideas/designs. Also the guys that have bed racks, do you like them?

That is similar but I’m wanting one that goes up the full height of the cab.

I have an Avid bed rack myself, it's a low profile rack so it does limit vertical bed space but I can still fit cargo bins underneath it just fine which is really all I need to do most of the time for camping trips. The low profile of the rack allows me to have my tent mounted to it so that it stays flush with the cab, which was what I wanted most

Here's the link, looks like they're on sale right now too...not a bad price compared to some racks

All Pro makes them: It comes un-welded so you can make it the exact height you want (also saves of shipping). You can find a local fabricator or a friend with a welder to help out. Or you could buy a $500 welder and it'd still be cheaper than a lot of racks I've seen, lol.

EDIT: this is what happens when you take too long to type up a response...

Another vote for @turbodb as he can customize it a bit if you need. Removed mine as I don't need my tent/rack during the colder months but here's a pic -
