We are just ducking around for now. I have a buddy who can actually tig weld and he’s coming over to show some pointers.

I’m thinking for that I’d also have to dial down the amperage and slow down? I have some bad undercut there.

Haven't been active in a couple months but been busy knocked my bed cage out over the past week just waiting on getting my shocks back and i should be good to go. This is my first time building a bed cage pretty happy with how it turned out.

Slowing down adds heat when TIging turn the amperage down and add more rod

I just bought the mulitprocess 220 a couple of weeks ago and so far it's great. For the price point being half the price of the big brands and the no questions asked 1 year return policy on it I figured there was no risk.

I have been hunting for reviews online. EVERYONE buys the 220...For me having to spend another $160 on accessories plus having to have another bottle of gas just to use the tig feature doesn't seem worth it.

    the vulcan 165 is $600
    the Vulcan 215 is $580
    the vulcan 220 is $800 (plus $160 in Tig accessories) = $960

so for $380 (215 vs. 220) you get the ability to tig by purchasing the 220.

If you spend another $220 ($1180 total if you purchase both the 165 and the 215) dollars you can have a dedicated tig machine on your welding cart. To me, thats worth it. Sorry for the rant I used this as a way to decide which one I am going to buy...

Any reason you went with the 220 other than the multi process ability?

These units are really impressing me as well.

The spool gun for welding aluminum is another reason to get. The 220.

After looking at how much money I can save by making my own bed cage and maybe welding in some front shock hoops, I figured I'd get a tig welder. I've been watching weldingtipsandtricks.com and it looks like I could get the hang of it. I only have a 110 hookup currently (no pun intended), but it seemed it would be alright to use a 3/32" rod with 80-90 amps with both of these. Any feedback on either of these?

I know I'll need a bender too - any suggestions? I figure I can use a grinder to cut until a deal on a saw comes my way. I read that people like band saws for cutting steel vs. a chop saw.

This is the style bed I want to make, but for a long bed.

I’m not big into tig, only done it a few times.
Can you not put a 220v outlet in?

No not where I'm renting. I used to arc weld back in high school and I've done enough soldering over the 10+ years I've been working on guitars that the idea of TIG welding doesn't bother me too much. I'll have a workshop / garage eventually and be able to get a mig machine or multifunction machine, but for now the size and more low key operation of tig is attractive for where I have my truck parked to work on.

I was looking for some suggestions on a good quality bender that doesn't break the bank.

I have this one and have been pretty impressed. I converted it to air/hydro so I did not have to have it bolted down.
