I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

I like circles myself (I like the dimes that method stacks) Try circles in a tight pattern I overlap mine by about 90% leaving a tight stack of dimes. as for the splatter your metal might be contaminated try prepping a little more by hitting all welded edges with a flap disk you also may need to adjust your gas, power & wire speed. maybe even a thicker wire .23 is small for what looks like 3/16th

Not my best work but here is a example of tight circles.

and remember... function over beauty. you dont need perfect dimes. that is just a bunch of internet fabbers talking shit that have seemed to poison the minds of everyone into believing that every weld must be PERFECT. thats total b.s. stop trying to make them look good, and instead try to get better at welding. the looks will come the more practice you get....

Yeah X2 on that one I finally here it from someone else . Everyone try's to make them look pretty and not strong you need to penetrate the materiel to have a strong joint. Look at structural welds on buildings in the fabrication world people would say they look like shit but they are some of the strongest joints.

yup thanks for the shackles jason. i was thinking i would be able to get a bit more heat with the .23 wire (is this right), when i use the .35 wire it has a tendency to through the braker.

Are you using flux cored wire? I use .030 solid wire with argon/co2 mix

.023 is pretty small wire for what you are doing.
I use .030 for 3/16" and smaller and .035 for anything bigger

I suck at electrician stuff but it should be 230v. Are you popping your main breaker using bigger than .023?

that isnt bad for gas at all. please enlighten me as to why some of you run a co2 argon mix though. for steel, co2 penetrates better than a co2 mix gas. yes spatter may increase slightly, but i have run nothing but pure co2 on my mig welder always and have nothing bad to say about it. argon co2 mixes are good gases when used proper, but for dom / mild / 4130, pure co2 is the way to go....
