those things are pretty bullet proof. Just make sure it comes with all the pins, and maybe make sure the lock bolt threads are good. Also check the die and follower for abnormal wear.

Looks fairly worn out to me.
Check for play in the pins as well. Especially the main pivot pin for the die

    I'll double triple check.

    A new bender would be nice but that's 300 + 350 + shipping

Not to buy. Just so you get everything-the CL one looks like it's missing the pins for example. A new one would also not include the die set which adds another $150+ bucks for each one. If everything is there, that CL find is a pretty good deal.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
This is why i went with the JMR all 4140 pins and heat treated dies sure it cost more but ive got well over 5000 bends with it and not a single mark on the bender or the pins.

My JD squared bender, about 4 years old, has a ovaled out #5 hole from the follow bar pin due to my friend using my bender to build chromoly front end pieces for another friends off road race truck. But I just have to laugh since this guy has let me use his fab shop and all his equipment back when I had nothing. :) I just about blew my back out making the front cross member for this street 4 link a couple weeks ago lol. 1-3/4" x .120 chromoly is HARD to bend on a manual bender when you haven't done so for a while. haha.

Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up a Mig welder for doing automotive welding. Frame, tube, and sheet metal welding.

I was trained by my dad who was a nuclear/x-ray certified welder, but all he knows is stick welding, as he retired from it a very long time ago.

Any recommendations for a good mig under $500?

If it was me using it on frames id atleast use a 210 or bigger machine, but you wont find one for that price range, at 500 ur best bet is to look on craigs for a used 140 180 mabey if u can find a good deal

    X2

Also check Amazon.com for refurbished Hobart Mig welders. Sometimes you'll find them on there and you can even get the 210 for around $550 iirc

Don't let your little 220v buzz box discourage you. My Lincoln has built many cages and it's only a 175. Sure you can't weld 1/2" extremely well but it can do a hell of a lot.
